I have a little mixer, does up to 8 tracks. I was thinking of sending things into my PC in actual multi track instead of just two lines in.
Anyone do this? How much does a card cost? What model do you use?

I use CoolEdit to record and edit a single track. I think it does up to 4 tracks...very easy and intuitive to use.

I typically use either soundforge or steinburg wavelab.
Look at maudio, audiotrak, aardvark or many other companies for mutli input sound cards with break out boxes.

I use an M-Audio Audiophile 2496. If you don't work with MIDI then I'd recommend the M-Audio Delta 410 (musiciansfriend.com has it for $99, much lower than everywhere else). That has four simultaneous inputs (2 analog, 2 digital). If you need more analog inputs the Delta 44 (4 analog ins), or 1010 (10 analog ins) might be for you. I haven't had much experience outside of M-Audio cards though.

I use a Digidesign 002R, along with Pro Tools LE 6.1. The M-Audio stuff is all well and good, but if you want to have any hope of ever having your stuff mixed at a real studio or ever being able to go back and forth between a studio and home with your music, you have to use Pro Tools. The price is relatively competetive with other combinations of hardware and software. And of course if you've got $15,000 to burn, you can buy a real Pro Tools HD system. :)
