audio problems

Okay maybe someone here can help. the local computer store that fixes computers couldn't answer my question and the tech support from my computer's manufacturer couldn't answer it either. Sometimes while I am on the computer (internet or otherwise) I will lose all sound. My cdrom will still play audio cds but my mp3 players will load up and nothing more. Windows events will not play at all. The only solution I have found for this recurring problem is to go into my device manager and remove my wave device which in turn also removes my gameport joystick device. when I refresh, both are restored and I have sound on my windows events and my mp3 player will operate normally. Before I discovered removing the device and refreshing the only thing I could do then was to restart but that is really a pain when you are on the internet and have to log back in etc etc.
