Audio Problem

I have just reformatted this computer running windows vista. It has on board sound and the sound cuts in and out.... The speaker at the bottom right keeps flashing with an X. In control panel under sound the Speakers keeps going from working to unplugged.... HELP!!!!

I just disconnected the front panel audio (it was a new case) and it works fine.......
