Audio Problem Shuttle AN35N

I have a Shuttle AN35N with an odd sound problem.

I built this for a friend a couple of years ago and left everything stock, including the OB sound. I set up dual boot with Win2K and XP Pro. The OB sound was working fine then, and recently she said XP was hosed and the sound stopped working.

Got it back today and here's the deal.

From Win2K or XP all I can get is left channel sound, and it's choppy. I installed new drivers from nVidia's site but it change a thing - still left side only and choppy in both OS's.

I figured the OB sound had died so I installed a SB Live that I had and there was no change. It still has the same choppy left channel sound from either OS. I've tried new drivers from nVidia and then from Creative, deleting one before installing the other.

The PC was full of spyware and several viruses. A scan with Webroot Spysweeper, AVAST and then Trend Micro cleaned the crap out- at least all the crap it found. There are no conflicts in the DM and it now boots clean with either OS, so I am down to wiping the drive and starting over as a possible fix but thought I would see if this problem sounded familiar to anyone before I take that step.

Yes, the speakers are fine. Any suggestions before I pull the trigger on the format?

Thanks!

Thanks. Most of the viruses could not be cleaned and were therefore deleted, so I am guessing their forced removal also removed some file(s) that go beyond just normal divers. It almost acts like the sound (either card) is fighting over IRQ's but I haven't spotted any conflicts. I will most likely have to hose the system down and start over.

No longer stumped. I'm back to put an end to my question should someone else stumble across it doing a search for the same problem.

Removing the viruses brought back audio on one channel regardless of the card used. On board or PCI card made no difference. It was scrubbed with more spyware and virus cleaners and still worked fine otherwise. Apparently something was damaged in both OS's that prevented proper sound processing.

I hosed the hard drive clean and reinstalled both OS's and drivers again and now the sound is back.

Thanks for the read. Just thought I would ask for tips first, then report back when I pulled the trigger.

When a virus hijacks files or substitutes there is little you can do except reformat. Glad you got it fixed and prepared for future battles too I hope!

Captains: Shuttle AN35N boards can handle Socket A processors up to an Athlon 3200+!

Frintin - She purrs like a cat. I don't miss the XP days but I sure liked the Shuttle AN35N board. I built several and all of them are still going strong without a hint of trouble. If this one had not inadvertently ended up in the wrong hands I wouldn't have gotten it back infested with spyware and viruses. It's well protected now.
