Audio not working on mobo anymore

I have an Asus a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard. I put together a computer with it within the last year, and everything had been fine except the processor was running a bit hot.

So, I went ahead and changed the heatsink this weekend (to a SI-97A), and put everything back together. However, afterwards my audio ports are no longer working properly. The motherboard has onboard audio, and when I plug the speakers into it I can't hear anything unless I put the volume on max, at which point I can barely hear it.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong here?

Did you try a different set of speakers to elminate that?

No, don't have a different set of speakers, though I should be able to borrow one from a friend.

Seems odd that that speakers would happen to go out at the exact same time I worked on the mobo though I'll give it a try.

Also, if your case has a front-panel audio jack and you unplugged its cable from the motherboard, that would cause it too. In that situation, either plug the case's audio cable back in or else re-jumper the FPAUDIO header to factory stock.

Ya know, I think you might have nailed it here.

I installed the new heatsink for my brother who lives elsewhere (I originally built the computer for him), and his case has an audio port on the top of it. When I took the motherboard out to replace the heatsink I had to unplug that port, and he couldn't find his manual so I didn't know where it needed to be plugged back in, and just left it unplugged since he never used that port anyway.

I guess the mobo could have a jumper that I set way back when I built the computer such that it was expecting this port to be plugged in. It seems a bit odd that the other audio port wouldn't work though, but I'll definitely give this a shot tonight or tomorrow. Thanks.
