Audio Network/System, how do I set this up?

Ok, so this is what I want to do, I've got a spare computer with a bunch of MP3's on it, and I've got Sony SS-CR350 speakers

1) Now what do I need to purchase to hook these guys into my computer?

2) Since my video card has TV out, I'm guessing that once I get these speakers hooked into my computer I could use the PC to play DVD's on my TV, is there anything special I'd need to do for that?

3) Anyone know of any helpful websites to learn more about how to do this stuff?

Thanks so much for the help!! I've never had a nice sound system before, so this should be fun to put together.

Those speaker are part of a surround sound setup, but missing the amplifier, subwoofer, and other 2 speakers. You might want to return them if you can, to get a complete package.

If you can afford to, the best thing to get for surround would be a nice 5.1 package like the Onkyo HT-S680 for $400 at Crutchfield.com, possibly much less elsewhere.

If you can't return or re-sell the Sonys, you can get a nice subwoofer for $150 from Amazon.com (see main page of GottaDeal.com) and get 2 more surrounds (front left/right or rear L/R). You'll also need a receiver, Onko and Pioneer make good budget ones. You don't need a "digital" receiver just one that is 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1. Cost will be $150-250.

You can hook up your PC to a receiver using either analog stereo in, analog 6-channel for surround, or optical or coaxial digital if your PC soundcard has those.

Finally, you could also just get a PC speaker setup from Logitech or Klipsch, but the Onkyo above will sound better.

what kind of sound output options do you have with your PC? ideally, you would run an optical cable from your sound card to a receiver to power the speakers. If you are not interested in surround sound, all you really need is a receiver.

as for question #2, that depends entirely on what kind of TV you have. Specifically, what inputs it has.

i learned everything i know from AVSforum.com.

thanks for the input guys, looks like I may be selling those speakers on ebay and opting for a package.

What kind of sound would I get if I just picked up a receiver? Would the sound quality be ok with just a center and two rear speakers?

I also noticed that my speakers are 120 and 110w does that mean I'd need a receiver that has a least 120w per channel?

It will sound a lot like the desktop speakers that come with computers honestly

hummm, that's not very promising, thinking of spending all that cash and having the same quality sound 🙁

Those speakers you have rely on a subwoofer to produce anything below 120 Hz or so. So without it, the sound is gonna be rather empty.

hummmmm, I wonder if I could find a reciever, woofer with 2 front speakers package, that might make it worth keeping the sony's.

so what would happen if I ran a receiver that had only 100w per channel, how would that effect the center and rear speakers since they are 110 and 120 w

#1 chances are the receiver you buy wouldn't actually be 100w per channel

#2 you will never use 100 watts per channel with those speakers

#3 Power is a great marketing item

#4 Ignore power ratings(for the most part)

awesome, thanks for the info. Now I'm off to try and find some receiver front speaker subwoofer combo, hahaha, looks like my chances of finding that are remote.

^ all true. those ratings are the maximum watts you can feed the speakers without damaging them, and it's really a meaningless number.

For a surround setup it's best to have matched speakers, and I suspect it will be hard to find the separate pieces you're missing for any less than the cost of that Onkyo matched set.

Dave is right on. Get the Onkyo set. I think I have seen it for $400. That is an absolutely incredible deal. Spend the cash, you will be happy 🙂

ok, you guys have sparked my interest, know anything about good TV's out there? I don't need anything fancy, a nice budget one would be good around $200 or less

any good brands?
