Audio Issue with Windows Movie Maker

I have captured some video from a miniDV tape and saved it as an AVI file on my hard drive. When I play it with any mainstream player (Windows Media Player, etc), it plays absolutely fine.

I decided that I wanted to edit a few things, so I opened up the movie with Windows Movie Maker. However, whenever I drag the video into the "timeline," the audio quality drastically decreases. As I said, elsewhere, it plays fine. Why is this happening, and what can be done to remedy the situation?

Thanks

just asking, can you use a program like GSpot codec information to tell us how the audio is encoded? Plus, why are you using WMM?

It's PCM Audio encoded.

I'm using WMM simply because it's free, it's easy to use (I don't need advanced video editing tools), and I've had no problems with it in the past. I've tried Avid Free DV, and although it's fairly straightforward to use, the interface is awkward to me.
