Audio gurus, I need your help!

A friend of mine recently gave me a set of Infinity bookshelf speakers but the 8" woofers in them are blown (lots of rattling when they hit a bass lick). The tweeters and mid range drivers are still in excellent shape and the wooden cabinets are in perfect condition. Where can I get some good but inexpensive replacements for the woofers? At one time these speakers were pretty expensive (when they were bought 7 years ago), and I figured they'd make a nice gift for my nephew who's about to turn 16 and is building his first system.

You try the yellow pages? I'm sure there are some listings under Home Audio or Electronics repair or something of the sort. However I have the feeling that it might not be worth it to repair it, but you never know. Good luck!

Nah, it'd be too expensive to get someone to repair them. I just want to get some replacement 8" woofers and do it myself (that shouldn't cost too much.

Just try an electronics store like Best Buy or something like that. They should have what you need.

You can go to Radio Shack and buy woofers though I don't think they'll make your Infinity's sound as good as they should.

Find a place that does repair speakers and see what they have for sale. They'll be able to match the drivers up to the box properly. They probably have a source for good prices too. I took some old KLH speakers to a place to match up for some rears. They put them on a bench and pumped some signals through. Found out both bass drivers resonated at too high of a frequency. He suggested RMA'ing them to KLH. I said they must be out of warranty, since I'd already owned them a few years. Not to worry. He got them RMA'ed no problem. He also sold me some neat little Bose 5" drivers to use as the bass driver for some homemade surrounds. Still using them 18 years later!

Contact Infinity, you'll be suprised at how cheap a replacement set of woofers will cost.

Actually, repair shops can be quite cheap. When the woofer went out on my Infinity speaker, the charge to replace it, total, was 16 bucks.

Try PartsExpress.com for replacment drivers. Are the surounds made out of foam? If they are rotted out it pretty easy to replace those with a kit NewFoam.com sell some good kits with an instruction video.

I think I've found some replacement drivers that meet the same specs as the original 8&quot;ers (I'm not going OEM on the replacements, they're WAY too expensive ($86ea) ). But these are dual voice coil instead of single. Will this cause a problem? Does &quot;Dual Coil&quot; mean that it has 2 sets of connectors on the speaker instead of 1? I'm new to this aspect of audio, and I have no idea.

look at the impedance (ohms) as long as that is the same as the old one, no.
