I have been using some really old PC speakers since they came with a dell I bought back in 2000. I have never used anything other than just plain old 2.0 PC speakers, but recently they are starting to really crap out. I have been thinking of getting a stereo receiver and a couple of bookshelf speakers to replace and upgrade them.

I am using onboard sound on an M2n-sli deluxe 570, which is soundmax. I don't have any real complaints with it, it isn't the greatest but it does okay. It has an optical out, which I would like to use. One of my least favorite things about my old pc speakers is hissing and interference from the machine. I will use my computer for TV, music, gaming and a lot of DVD and blu ray.

My budget is $170 for both the receiver and the speakers, I am on a very strict budget. I would also like to get something from Amazon, for the free trial of prime which will save me about $50 on shipping.

I have been eying this receiver:

And either of these two speakers:

What do you guys think of this for a budget PC audio setup? Any things you would change? I have never really gotten into audio like this before, and any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Well it's not from Amazon, but ShopOnkyo has a good deal on the 4100 system that would fit your budget.

Apparently it's $149 for a first time user of the site once you sign in and get your $10 discount. (Free shipping)

I do think that in general you're better off getting a quality stereo setup vs. a surround system at the same price, but for the budget you're looking at your speaker choices are quite limited. I honestly don't know how the pioneer or sony speakers you linked to sound.

Sounds like the computer will be the only source?

Thanks for that link, I will need to consider that. Space is a concern with this setup too, I don't have too much room to work with and I am not sure I could find a place for all of those speakers.

The computer will be my only source for this setup. It is my TV, home theater, music library and game system. It is where I go when I am bored.
