I need to get some noise cancelling headphones for someone whose stateroom is directly under the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. The noise when they are working up ther grinding/launching aircraft etc. and whatnot is truly awesome, and I was thinking some noise cancelling headphones might help.

Suggestions?

I don't think noise-cancelling headphones are going to do jack if his room is under the friggin flight deck.

I don't believe NC headphones will block out klaxons, whistles, etc.

heh I had the top rack so my ceiling was the flight deck on the Indy. I can't imagine any kind of headphones that could have shut that noise out.

hmm.. does not sound good. I haven't actually tried sleeping in there, but she says it is almost impossible to sleep or study. I am hoping headphones will at least help a little bit.

Noise cancelling works for steady sounds like the wind noise on an aircraft or the drone of an air conditioner. But for something that constantly changes, like aircraft launching or trapping, something like the ER-4 or E3 are best.

If you're referring to one of Etymotic's in-ear phones, I'd agree. Play some white noise through there and then maybe she could sleep.

I was in a 8 inch Field Artillery battery for many years. I didn't find anything that could dampen the noise, but I can tell you from experience, you eventually get used to it or tired enough to sleep through anything.

If she gets a decent set of headphones she should be able to listen to music and not hear things like the arresting gear retracting etc. It would at least mute it a lot. It really depends what part of the flight deck she is under. If she is under the catapaults then she will definitely here the jets on launch even with headphones since they go full AB on launch.
