Audio enthusiasts- what do you think of Athena or Wharfedale speakers?

I'm thinking about picking up a 6 channel setup from them and upgrading from my 3-year old Polk setup. Good move? No? If you know what I'm talking about, I'll give you more details... just wanted to see if anyone here had any product knowledge on 'Britain's most famous loudspeakers'. TIA!

Edited to now include Athena in the mix. Now I'm looking at the AS-F2s...

Not bad, but then they're not ultra-high end, either. Do you have some discount or reason to buy Wharfedales?

Yes, I work at Best Buy. 😛 I can get their top of the line model that Best Buy carries for $240/pair and pretty insane discounts on the other channels too. After seeing the radical designs and blue woofers on the Best Buy line ('Zaldek'), I'm thinking, 'oh great, a reputable manufacturer goes mainstream and starts to produce sub-par products'. Athena looks better, but not sure. The stores carry neither brand in the store, but only online. Crimney.

I'm also looking at Athena since I would get a discount as well. I don't need to upgrade my already superb Polk setup, but if I can get twice the speaker for upgrades on ten bucks here and ten bucks there after I sell my Polks, I'm very interested. I currently have 2000-model Polk RT400 main channel towers. I'm surfing AudioReview.com right now...

I have some very old wharfdales. Not top of the line or anything, but good purchase nonetheless. Crystal clear high and mid, the bass isn't so much muddy as it is weak though.

Cool. I'm not too worried about bass and large drivers (looking at the Wharf Diamond 8.4s with the dual 6.5"s) since I have a Velodyne sub. 😉

But I am very partial to taller tower speakers.

I would definitely check out the Athenas. Wharfdales are fine but they haven't been as competitive in the last 10 years or so IMO.

Yeah... mine are from the 70's or 80's I think. My dad's old speakers. Still sound great though!

What other brands can you get good discounts on? I consider Polk to be on par with Wharf if you get individual pairs (like RT28 / 38) instead of their sub/sats setup. If you have an RMxxxx and want a little more midrange then replacing some of the little sats might be all you need.

Wharfedale's are nice...decent construction, good looking, not as typical as some other "budget" speaker makers. Their silk dome tweeter is very smooth, not too bright or detailed...good for the price you get. I don't know what BB carries, but have you looked into their Pacific line?
