LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Country of purchase: USA

Budget range: Could spend as much as $1900, but not interested in spending this unless it provides substantial increases in power/longevity/versatility. Would prefer ca. $1400

Purpose (netbook, ultraportable, mainstream, gaming, desktop replacement, etc.): Portable, primary use is audio recording/programming/engineering, but would also like to be able to play games such as Bioshock Infinite, Batman: Arkham City, etc. Will be using a 27" monitor when at home.

Screen size preference: 15", but this is very flexible. However, I will be lugging this thing around everywhere, so I'd prefer to avoid heavy models, if possible.

OS preference (Windows/ Mac/ Linux): prefer OSX, but certainly willing to go the Windows route again.

Gaming requirements (example games and desired fps/settings): see above; not serious enough to care about FPS.

Performance requirements (video, CAD, etc.): Music production, especially live processing in MAX/MSP and potentially function as a basic recording studio/DAW. Also, not sure where to put this, but I want this to computer to last. My last two laptops each lasted more than 6 years.

Method of computer support (office supplier, college bookstore, self support): Self
Brand preferences and reasons (already owned accessories, familiarity, business compatibility): Prefer Mac, but the main reason for this post is I'm not sure I want another one.

Any particular style that you like (examples are great): Don't care.

Which of the following qualities would you prefer? (Choose one, the other, or balanced)

Long battery life -vs- Low weight: Long battery life

Build quality -vs- Low price: Balanced

Low noise/heat -vs- High performance: Balanced

Would you pay a premium for something that has:

High resolution screen: No

A great keyboard: I don't really understand this one, so no.

A great touchpad/mouse buttons: No

Great audio: Re: internal speakers? Then no.

List any features that are critical: (e.g. Optical drive, USB 3.0, SD card slot, ethernet port, HDMI port, bluetooth, VGA port, removable battery, glossy screen, matte screen, etc.) HDMI port, USB 3.0

I've been considering a couple laptops:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops...-series/y510p/ (the one with two GPUs)

Thoughts?

Um, "prefer OSX," kind of begs MBP. Usually people are looking for the HW quality of the Mac and battery life, but want to run windows. Sounds like your decision is about made.
