Audio distorts when talking for a long time in microphone

If I am talking through the pc using skype or ventrillo, if I talk continuously for about 30 seconds or more, my voice starts to distort and it sounds like I am under water. If I talk for only a few seconds, it doesn't happen.

I thought it was the microphone at first, but its not. Likely its my on-board audio. Anyways i can troubleshoot this, or is it just a dead/dying on-board audio? I looked for new drivers, there are none. Maybe uninstall/re-install completed, and look for firmware update in bios?

Any help would be great

Have you tried different ports? Different microphone?

A new sound card is cheap though, if that's all it is.

What motherboard do you have?

As has been said a soundcard is cheap and onboard ones often fail.

If you wanted a quick test you could just plug a USB soundcard in and try that, I have one I use for testing just this scenario.
