I live with my great aunt, who is 92 years old, a 40+ year kindergarden teacher retiree(sp?), and is afflicted by severe macular degeneration.

She has a cassette deck the National Library for the Blind gave her, which still is used; Readers Digest and other books are still read onto tape for the vision impaired. Two years ago she received a digital version (USB ready device), and a remarkable piece of equipment for a goverment item; so user friendly and durable for an item that is dropped often... I almost can't believe our (USA) goverment made it.

She loves to read, and everyday spends at least 3 hours trying to read the paper with magnifiers. Since I can now go on BARD https://nlsbard.loc.gov/cgi-bin/nlsbardprod/index.cgi
it has been much better for her. I can simply download books on to flash drives which plug into her new device.

But she hears of movies, and I can see it really pains her, that she cannot watch them - she cannot see well enough to understand the visual clues I take for advantage. She really wanted to see The Devil Wears Prada, Jersey Boys (play), and The Kings Speech, but now has simply given up on films.

Well, tonight I got War Horse from Netflix, and in addition to English/Spanish/French, there is an option for 'Audio Descriptive', which is basically a talking book (old people talk) of the movie.

Are there more like this? I watch alot of movies, and I've never seen this before. I know it pains her to hear so much about a great story on film that she could never realize without sight, and this audio descriptive is simply the answer.

Other movies you know use this, or something similiar? I haven't been able to give her a good (imo) present for ten years; she saved like crazy and money isn't a problem, and anything she needs, she has, minus her eyesight. I'd really love to be able to allow her to enjoy current movies she has heard of, and 'Audio Descriptive' is simply the perfect solution.

Have you asked the staff/manager at the state library or whatever state institution provides the books?

this page seems to have some current info, including a current list of new dvd's
https://acb.org/adp/
from some links, it looks like this just is very limited in how many movies have been adapted
one page indicated much more is being done in United Kingdom than USA
good luck

The complete list of DVDs released so far this year follows: War Horse, We Bought a Zoo, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Hop, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Muppets, The Sitter, The Descendants, Young Adult, The Adventures of Tintin, Jack and Jill, Footloose, Like Crazy, Hugo, Johnny English Reborn, Tower Heist, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, Anonymous, The Big Year, Dream House, In Time, The Thing, Real Steel, Paranormal Activity 3 (Blu-ray Only), The Ides of March, Moneyball, and What's Your Number?. All 78 DVDs from 2011 have been moved to their own page, just like the 48 2010 DVDs were. All 36 prior to 2010 fit on one page of their own.

Thanks for the links.

Funny that I see Hugo on that list, because I just had it a week or so ago, and I didn't see an audio descriptive option. Gotta start exploring the setup options more in DVD's I guess; I probably missed those by not going into that menu, and probably would never have found out about War Horse having it either, except you are offered the language options as part of the process to watch the movie.
