Audio compressors?

Hey I am converting some old analog tapes to cd and I would like to find some kind of good free program that I can quickly run the wav files through so's I can compress the frequencies.. that is to boost the lows and lower the highs... Yeah, anyway...Im looking google right now too..

But if anyone know a good app, help me out.

Thanks man. That program is great!!

However, I am still having trouble understanding how to properly set the compressor perameters.. I keep trying to get the highs and lows close to the same but I am doing it wrong.

I dont know what to set the threashold at.. and I dont know what the other two options mean.
