i was trying to rip an audio cd into mp3s using creative DAC, with my dvdrom drive (40x cdrom)

initially there is no problem. but at later tracks, i can actually hear the drive spinning down, the progession bar stop, then the drive spinning up, the bar moved abit, and down again... for some time. when i did not use "mute during recording" i could hear the song stop as the drive spin down, and start again when it spin up. needless to say, the resultant mp3 was totally messed up with all the intermittent pauses.

i am running a C400 @ 540, with 256 mb ram. i really don't think this is a problem with my system cos i tried the same audio cd with another 40x cdrom drive, and it was perfectly fine.

what could be the problem?

All I can suggest is to find out if your DVD needs DMA enabled, and try another program. I use Exact Audio Copy, there is a great guide to setting this program up here.

The program can rip and encode to MP3's using the LAME encoder(which is good), but it can be tricky to setup. That's all the advice I can think of off the top of my head, it could be that your DVD just doesn't rip audio very well.
