Audio always cutting out - possible hardware problem!

This has been plaguing my computer for months now. Whenever any audio is playing, a video, mp3, game, whatever, the audio will randomly cut or "pop" out. This is usually fixed by re-starting the video or mp3, but the time between cut-outs varies. It can be an hour, or two seconds. This isn't as simple as a speaker problem, since when the audio cuts out on an mp3, the song progress is frozen.

I don't have a sound card, it's built into my motherboard, an ECS Elitegroup Mainboard. A pretty cheap model, I admit. I've heard this brand has audio problems.

I know I need to just go out and buy a sound card, but is there anything I can do other than that?

A BIOS flash might solve the problem, I would check on the ECS Website before doing this, and also their support or knowledge base.
