Hi all, I just installed the Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro version (the one that has the external break-out box). The problem is that the mic in/line in1 works but I have to turn the knob 80% to full when the mic is like 6" away from my mouth. Is that normal? Also, do you guys/gals has the volume control in windows all the way up the leave the volume control to the external devices? or have the windows volume at around the middle?

Hmmm...my Audigy 2 ZS has a mic boost option. Go into the Creative Surround Mixer (volume controller) and select Microphone as the recording device (click on the icon under REC). On mine, above the Mic icon is a small red plus sign. Click that for the Mic Boost option.
 
Wow...I didn't know about that...let me check. Also, about my other question. Do you turn up the windows volume control to max and leave the speaker's external volume control handle it or what is the optimal way?
 
The mixer playback levels should generally be set to max or slightly less and left alone; then the external amp volume used to regulate.

You know, all the essential controls are in the Audio Console and the Windows Mixer. Creative Mixer does not add anything and as you found out may have less obvious controls. Its only advantage is the placement of recording control along side those of playback for convenience if sources are changed frequently.

Personally, I just config the AC and WM after a driver install and exceedingly rarely have use for 'em again, likewise using a remote control for volume.

Oh really I didn't know that. I have mine set about halfway in the mixer, otherwise the speaker volume seems way to sensitive...
 
Well, do what works... as long as there is sufficient volume sans any distortion or noise. The slightly less than max schtick is supposed to preclude clipping but I've never experienced any over the years with various models. Noise such as hiss should not be an issue either with analog inputs muted and a decent amp. Mine does not even begin to introduce any noise at all until it is cranked up to what would be deafening levels given a source (and I have very good hearing).
