Audigy vs. Audigy 2

I've got a new PC, and I've been using onboard sound (RealTek i think). I'm not impressed, but I'm not dissatisfied either.

I have an old Audigy Gamer edition that I bought with my other PC. My questions is, am I better off using this Audigy card in my new machine or getting the Audigy 2? I've never really liked creative's products; but there doesn't seem to be any quality alternative out there anyway. I'm hooking this up through a digital coax out, so I don't really care abuot the onboard DD or DTS decoding, I can have my receiver do that work anyway.

Any thoughts? Or should I just say the hell with Creative and stick with onboard?

Does your onboard sound support digital out or just analog? If it supports digital out, the quality between onboard and the Audigy (1 or 2) will be identical.

If you're using analog, the Audigy will likely sound better if you have some high end speakers. You'll get a few more frames per second if you play games with EAX turned on. I used onboard sound for a few weeks and it wasn't all that bad.

What do you primarily listen to? What kind of spekaers do you have?

I'm using a set of Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers, 4.1 surround sound, DD THX certified. They've always sounded great. They've got analog or digital inputs. I never thought EAX was something that great anyway. I think i'm going to stick with the onboard until I can find maybe an Audigy 2 or 4(I doubt) OEM model for cheap, like <$50.
