Audigy Platinum questions...

I was told by a semi-reliable rep. that the 1394 port supports 9 pin connection.
To the best of my knowledge, firewire istill only 4 and 6.
He tried to tie this 9 pin "feature" into the 100db snr "rating" it has, as he claimed it drastically reduces noise since there are more (9) different pins on the connecter.

HUH!???!!?!

I hope he is right, because I HATE it when misinformed reps. come into a computer store telling people all kinds of fluff.

Someone care to explain or disprove? In addition, if you can expand on the 100db snr (whatever) marked as a feature on the box. What does this do differently than, say, a Herc Game Theatre XP or similar product.

Thanks

The 100db SNR rating simply means that there is low distortion on the card. The original SBLive had a 96db SNR rating. Supposedly these are very good numbers and you won't find noise a problem unless you are running very, very, high end sound processing. NOTHING to do with the FireWire port.

With the simple expedient of actually LOOKING at the SB1394 port on my Audigy (duh.....who would have thought of that???), you are correct in that it is a 6 pin connection.

While I am not familiar with the Crystal Sound chipset, I would say that the specs are similar and would not make a material difference to you in terms of SNR.

Thanks, so what the hell is a 9 pin firewire?

Must I slap the rep. next time I see him?

Oh, and BtW, is 4 pin firewire the same as the sony ilink?

no such thing as a 9-pin IEEE1394 interface for sure (I've never heard of one).

Yes, 6-pin is the standard IEEE1394 and Sony's flare is the 4 pin i-Link.

Were can I find a review of the Audigy? And the box says that is has 24 bit sound as oposed to the typical 16 bit. Does that make a diference in sound, a noticable diference?

Thanks

Thanks for the reviews. It doesn't seem all that impresive. I still have the Vortex2 2500 and I guess I will be keeping it for at least a litle while longer.

"Yes, 6-pin is the standard IEEE1394 and Sony's flare is the 4 pin i-Link."

Both formats are part of the standard. 6pin has two power wires that the 4pin doesn't. There is no 9pin format. 4pin is used on camcorders and most products intended to be portable, it's not a Sony specific standard. Sony brands IEEE1394 iLink on their products as apple brands it firewire.
