Audigy digital out, what kind of jack is it??

I have an Audigy X-Gamer sound card and I want to use the digital output and run it to my home stereo. My reciever has digital input by spdif (which looks like an rca to me, any comments on this?) and optical.

Question: What kind of speaker jack gets plugged into the Audigy?

I tried to use a 1/8" stereo plug, but that didn't seem to work. The plug fit kinda loosely, and it looked different than the others. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks Bacillus, actually I did have a 1/8" phono plug.😱 My bad.

It didn't seem to plug in to the socket securely. Plus it looked slightly different.

Question: Anyone here with an Audigy who is using digital out only?? and if so, what type of connection are you using??

Thanks in advance.

<< you need a MONO 1/8 inch male plug to female RCA adapter (available at radio shack)

NOT stereo

Yup, thats what I use on my SB Live! to get the digital out as SPDIF.
Here is a link to one and a gold plated one.

Thank you Sohcrates and Nord1899!

I figured I was close, but it didn't work. Now I have something to do this weekend. 5.1 here I come.🙂

Now a general follow up question. How the frick do 5.1 channels travel on a mono line???

Jus curious...

I'm thinking that the only way you can get a 5.1 out is with a game or cd file that uses a 5.1 soundtrack. Otherwise, the Audigy card does not encode Dolby Digital 5.1 from all the different channels on its own(it has no DD encoder). Though it could be that the digital out is Audigy's 4-channel digital speaker thing. Let us know.

I have a DVD drive that I'm planning to connect to my TV by s-video and this digital out from the Audigy. You guys think I'll have to connect the digital connection direct from my drive to the card on the inside of the box? Will the output from the DVD be decoded already?

I love learning.😕

Okay, to set it up here is what I have.

You will need to go to Sound Properties and turn on Digital Only. (Not sure exactly where this as I am at work and my work machine is crap.) Of course, if you plan on using the analoge outputs for normal computer usage, ignore this.
In your DVD Software (WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc...) you will need to turn on AC3/SPDIF/Dolby Digital passthrough. Note: This is limited in what OS it works under. WinXP and Win2k SP2 I know for a fact work.
Hook up a mono RCA cable (also called Coax Digital as opposed to Optical Digital) to your receiver.
Pop in a DVD and enjoy.

It is important to note that only things already encoded in 5.1 (such as DVD's) will be played in 5.1. The rest will be considered as PCM by the receiver (similar format to WAV/CD Audio, I think) and played in Stereo. You can of course use your receivers options to change that to things like Pro-Logic, Theater, Hall, etc... but you will not be able to get 5.1 for games, cd's, computer sounds, etc...

Hope that helps.

Use a mono adapter as mentioned earlier to connect to the coaxial (RCA plug) digital input on your receiver. Note that SPDIF is a signal standard and not really a connector standard. Your Audigy puts out a SPDIF digital signal and your receiver gets it. The Audigy will only put out the number of channels that the material contains. Therefore if the material is not encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS the signal will only be stereo. The bonus is you can run your receiver in Dolby Pro Logic mode, most all stereo signals decode nicely in this format.

Cool😎 it works! Now I just have to setup the subwoofer for the good stuff.

I want to thank all who responded, tremendous help. I would have never guessed that it was a mono output, and my local Radio Shack was all out of 1/8" connectors with 5.1 channels.😉

Once it's all done the first movie I'm going to watch is The Fifth Element, one of the coolest movies ever made, IMO.😀
