This just became available today with very little fanfare...just another incremental upgrade?

looks like it.

no new technology for a long while, and nothing on the horizon, so they needed to get people interested in something other than onboard sound.

Yep, that's pretty much all there is left to do in the audio field. You can only make audio sound so good, and for the vast majority of the public, these cards well exceed the capabilities of the speakers people are using for them. At about $260, this card isn't targetted at the mainstream consumer. Most of the features none of us will use, nor the connectors, but that's what you get with the highend. The card appears to do away with the SPDIF resampling to 48kHz and reportedly can bypass windows kmixer without the need for 3rd party hacks. Slightly higher quality audio specifications and reworked software suite is about all else that appears to be new.

that is the great thing about the soundcard market. Everytime you have a company that offers a truly revolutionary solution (like the Aureal Vortex) they get sued to death by lawsuits that have no grounds and eventually gets bought by creative because they can not afford the legal bills, creative, who sit on the technology and provide long product cycles of mere incramental upgrades that offer no innovation, stifles competition and innovation.

but hey, it makes my audigy2 ZS last for a much longer time than my geforce 6800 GT does in a market that has competition.
