Audigy 2 question...digital out?

Entity

Lifer
My friend has this card right here: Audigy 2, not platinum. -- just the bare card -- and he's trying to figure out what the digital out is. He wants to connect it to his Sony STR DE925, which has optical in and coax in, but the cables look different. What type of cable/connector does he need to connect this to his receiver?

It's an electrical output, and the connector type is a 3.5mm mini-type jack. To convert it to coaxial, use one of these with the coaxial cable (won't have to necessarily buy there, but they have good pics and service 🙂). Mono is fine because the single band on the connector will utilize stereo signals, but I think a proprietary system a la Creative MegaWorks & SoundWorks to have 5.1 sound over this connection. No harm in using a stereo adaptor though.

Will the cable I linked to work for optical, then? It's a mini -> optical cable; sounds like it should work.

Interesting cable, but I think it's probably PCM. It'd allow him to listen to music at a bit better quality, but I doubt (though I'm not positive) it'll transfer DD or DTS. You need a 1/8" miniplug (mono) to RCA mono converter. You can plug that into the digital in on his stereo. On a side note, you can use 1/8" miniplug (stereo) to RCA stereo converters to output to the external decoder on a receiver and run stereo speakers the same as computer speakers.

I don't think it will, as the mini-jack side is optical rather than electrical (the very tip is illuminated, can't see it in the pic), used most commonly for hooking up portable DATs and MD recorders to TOSlink outputs (I use one with my NF2 mobo and MD recorder). These portables autosense between electrical analog and the optical digital in one port.
