Audigy 2 plat hooked to Onkyo HT-s770 issue

OK, basically I got everything hooked up. I am connected to my onkyo 7.1 receiver via spdif optical cable from my audigy.

I get music and regular sound to work fine with all the speakers. But when I try to use something that is supposed to be in 5.1 or 7.1 (like CoD2)... I get NO sound from my rear speakers.

I can tell that CoD2 is trying to use the rear speakers because when I do a 180 in the game, I get no sound... so it's in 5.1 or 7.1 in the game, but my receiver isn't processing it to the rear speakers.

Any help or guides would be great.

your only runing one cable w/ a ditigal connection thats only good for stero PCM or pre encoded DTS / Dolby / AC3 you need to hook up analoug connections between your reciver and your sound card for 5.1 or higher output from a non pre encoded source like games or switch sound cards to something like an HDA X-mystique 7.1 Gold that does Dolby Digtial 5.1 encoding on the fly like the old Nforce soundstorm.

Cool, thanks for the critical info, Arcanedeath.

I have another question. My Onkyo receiver has only 6 analog inputs (5 speakers, 1 sub). Will I be able to hear sound from my surround back speakers (the extra 2 speakers to make 7.1).

Also, with the suggested sound card you mentioned. Will that sucker be in true 7.1?

I am just so frustrated to have a 7.1 system and not even being able to use the digital inputs or get true 7.1 from my current sound card. Thanks in advance.

You could split the surround output and send it to the surround and rear input on the receiver. You'd just need to adjust the volume control in the creative software to boost the surround signal to compensate.

You'd get true 5.1 with the rear speakers giving the same output as the surrounds.

I don't have an A2 and wish I could give you more decisive info on any issues with the subwoofer output. If you can get some kind of crossover control going on the audigy2 you'll be fine, but if you can't do that you may run into issues with the sub not working when on 6channel direct input. If something like that happened, you could use some splitters and take the bass of the front channels.

If you ditched the A2 and got a DDL card, you'd get a DD stream of true 5.1 from games. No sub issues.
If movies that are 5.1 DD encoded play in DDEX mode on your receiver and give you 7.1 output, I think the same should be true for the computer input from a DDL card.

coolness... I'll take a trip to Radio Shack sometime soon and get the splitters.

I'll settle for 5.1 sound but would like the sound from all 7.1 speakers. I'll see how it goes.

Thanks again fellas.

Just to make sure, something like three of these and then run RCA cables to the 6 channel direct would be the starting point.

I just read over what I said about the 5.1 to 7.1 analog splitting and I don't know what I was thinking. You wont be able to clone the surrounds to the rears without an 8 channel direct input (duh). Sorry if I confused you on that part.

thanks for the update.

just another baby step towards creating a super audio / gaming / workstation / theatre system on a budget.

I wish I was just rich and hired people to do work and complain when I don't have my bottle.

But where's the fun in that?

Whew... just canceled my order for my HT-780s.... looked on the back again and saw it wasn?t a 7.1(8 channel in) on the back of the receiver. Still planning on ordering SKS-HT530 but what is a good receiver with true 7.1 in, not too expensive, and that will power all of them?

BTW you will need a 2x 4-conductor 3.5mm to 3 RCA Component cable to output to true 7.1, they are usually called camcorder a/v cables. You can also use creative?s Home Theater Cable if they sold it in the US.(Apparently its only available in Europe)

if I got an x-mystique, then it would encode in DDL and it could pass it thru spdif, right?

yeah

are there any other similar cards...that can encode in DDL and/or DTS?

Yes.

Turtlebeach has a DDL solution. There have been a few others that have come out too, but those two are the most popular ones.

HDA/Bluegears is coming out with a DTS live card soon.

My suggestion in this case is just live w/ 5.1 there is not a big enough difference going from 5.1 to 7.1 to make it worth the extra hassle and cost in this case, also to make life simple just replace your audigy2 w/ a DDL card like the HDA or Turtle Beach card and then you can just stick w/ your single spdif cable and still get 5.1 all the time.

I don't think that's a DDL card. There's a DDL version and one that doesn't do it.

That is excellent news, I am indeed seeing an X-Plosion card on http://www.hidiaudio.com/ featuring DTS connect/interactive. And from http://www.cmedia.com/product/CMI8788.htm I'm getting,

DTS® Interactive ¡V a real-time 5.1encoder that takes any 2 or more channel and encodes it into DTS bit stream.

Shame it's not DTS-ES and only 5.1, but there you go, there's always got to be something to complain about! ;)
