Just got a m6805 a couple of days ago (thanks again Cross ;)) and am a little underwhelmed with the on-board ALC-650.

Looking to get a sound upgrade, preferrably not a compromised solution (Extigy, Audigy 2 NX) and portable to a desktop. After a little searching, the Audigy 2 PCMCIA looks to fit the bill (full HW EAX, no bandwidth problems, more or less a PCI Audigy 2). If I'm going to sink down $$$ for a sound card, it had better be usable in a future desktop (circa Dec05). Cardbus readers seem to be cheap enough (~$28 on newEgg).

Anyone think of anything wrong with this idea (compatibility, the card sucks, etc.)? I'm really intrigued by this, as the m6805 has just replaced an equivalent desktop rig (selling the pieces in my FS/FT).

It should work, but I haven't tried it. Let me know how the card is, I'm interested by them as the sound on my M6805 is less than stellar. Another good upgrade would be a 7200RPM hard drive.

My m6805 came with a 40GB Fujitsu 5400rpm 8MB. Of course, it can't quite compete with a 200GB 7200rpm 8MB HDDD, but it's still surprisingly swift. Plus, upwards of $2/gig isn't too appealing. I know, I know - been spoiled by all the $0.25/gig deals of the past few years :p

On 2nd thought, I will probably shoot for the Audigy 2 PCMCIA. After all, a SB Evil! 5.1 did cost $60+ not too long ago...
