Audigy 2 or ...

I'm going to buy a sound card later this summer. While I have a nice home-stereo setup in the other room, it is not used by only me so I also watch DVDs a lot on my PC. I play games (i'm no die-hard gamer), but above all we deal with audio a LOT. My older brother uses it when he's home from college and we do a lot of shows (DJing and composing techno music), so audio qualiy is a DEFINITE priority. We listen to music and make it more than anything else. However we don't have the money (we're college students you know) for a professional solution. Knowing these things, could someone recommend a sound card? I have looked around review sites, but I would like end-user input on them. I have seen the Revolution 7.1, and it looks tempting...and so does the Audigy 2. I have an Audigy 1 right now, but I want to upgrade to a better solution. We have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in the other PC and that is a very good card as well. So, what are your thoughts on the right solution?? I am open to any opinions.

If audio production/music comp is your main thing, best bets under $200 are: Echo Mia, M-Audio Audiophile 2496, Terratec EWX 24/96.

If you want to do some gaming, consider: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum, M-Audio Revolution 7.1, or Terratec DMX 6-fire.

If you want to go portable, M-Audio has the Audiophile USB for $200 most places.

If you have $800 to spend, and you want to do multitrack recording, there's always the Digidesign Digi001. 😉

I was initially thinking of maybe the M-Audio Revolution 7.1, because of our experience with their higher-end stuff from time to time. Then again, the 6fire is also good as someone recommended it as well. The Audigy2 is definitely tempting (though we don't need that extra drive, so we wouldn't buy the platinum), but I remember this Audigy and the pains it caused from time to time so I am extremely hesitant to buy another one. To the DigiDesign Digi001, well, if only! 😉

I have heard mixed things about the Revolution 7.1, but nothing about the 6fire...but they ARE worth it, right? Without a doubt, they both have the good audio quality I am looking for...but its just the question of gaming. If either of them is absolutely terrible at it, then I might just go with an Audigy 2 in the long run. However I have read the audigy 2 still has poor digital recording (or maybe just recording in general) compared to those...and I am sure we might need a card that records masterfully (but is below $200). Thanks for everything! :-D
