Audible car alarms are usless and should be banned

Ugh, a car alarm was going off all evening on our street. I can ignore it during the day like that, but then it started-up again after going to sleep and went on through the night until the morning despite three calls to 311 (NYC non-emergency #), all of which were "escalated" to 911 (apparently I wasn't only one to call, too). Glad there wasn't a "real" emergency or we'd all be dead!

As opposed to the silent type?

Actually...yes. The silent type that sends a message to your mobile phone or a dedicated pager so that you can take action if necessary.

Sounds like a plan to me. I think that there's nothing wrong with the audible ones that go off when a vehicle is being towed however. Anything that inhibits towing or makes a vehicle untowable is awesome in my book.

Mine stopped three douchebags from breaking into my car at 2 in the morning. I jumped up and looked out the window when i heard it go off, only to see three punks all running in different directions.

so i think they are useful.

Apparently whoever owns this car didn't hear bleep. All day and all night.

They do serve the purpose of drawing attention to the car (even though many people ignore them), but they should shut off automatically after a minute or two.

I agree.

I had an alarm myself and I totally hated it. Even if it went off I wouldn't even bother to look at the car, I'd just shut it up.

I use lojack first warning system now, which is probably as useless as anything, but at least I don't have to worry about someone throwing stuff at my car because the alarm won't shut up.

Most do but apparently have nothing intelligent beyond that so it can go on and on and on. This particular one would go off five times, wait a minute then repeat (more or less I wasn't exactly counting). If the purpose is to alert people to a theft it would make FAR more sense to have it go off far less often. Nobody here thinks a car alarm going off means a car is being stolen because 99.9999999999% of the time it's not being stolen. So, useless and a harm to the public good when they continue to go off at night.

Because you are always close enough to your car and willing to defend it in whatever manner possible.

I think the real thread title should be "Over-sensative car alarms are annoying and should be banned."

Hell yeah! My dad's car has a silent alarm that, upon realizing the car is stolen, activates the car's phone system and makes 4 calls... pne to LoJack; one to the police to provide tracking info; one to my dad's cellphone to let him know; and one to the MB dealer. Everyone will know the car has been stolen and where it is before it even reaches the end of the block.

Noiseless alarms FTW! Noisy alarms can DIAF.

I have no problem with "noisy" alarms. The first time it stops someone from stealing stuff from your car you'll be thanking it instead of bashing it.

The alarms I hate are the over sensitive ones.
A roaring muscle car with a louch exhaust can set those things off one by one as it passes.

There used to be one car in the apartment lot that you couldn't even park next to because it triggered so easily.

In general, though, I love 'em. They're also useful for when someone in the lot accidentally backs into my truck. I've even caught *maintenance* hitting it with their frigging golf cart thanks to my noise alarm. And the alarm has NEVER gone off without a good reason.

well they're audible primarily because it's used to draw attention. Did it fail to do that ? 😀

If you're a thief, you'd be a bit more hurried as opposed to a car making no sounds at all. No sounds - they have all night.

Frankly I think they should all page to the keyfobs to alert the owners too... but only the high end ones do that.

No, their purpose is to prevent theft. Nuclear bombs are meant to end wars, but you don't see us nuking Iraq.

Anyhow, many car owners set-off their own car alarms then casually get in and eventually turn it off. Hard to distinguish between that and a good theif unless you're a few feet away.

No, cheap ass ones that'll run until the battery drains should be banned. As well as bad installs that make em go off if a regular mid-sized truck drives by.

There are ones that send out a page to your cellphone/pager/alarm fob, but those tend to be expensive, and won't be sold in those "only $99 for an alarm, installed!" places. At least not for $99.

I know mine turns off for good after a minute or so. That, and I've once caught someone leaving a 3" high dent in my door because it went off as I was walking back towards it. If it didn't go off, they woulda just driven off.

my old viper 300 ESP works like this.

little bump, 6 quick chirps
big bump or other sensor activation, 2 minutes of noise
3 big bumps or other sensor activation, the sensor that is causing the alarm to go off is disabled until next drive cycle. other sensors remain in operation
