Audi TT 3.2 quattro Roadster

Looks nice, but I feel that "gently governing" a car is like gently castrating someone. Still, would be fun to drive.

If you can find a place to drive 155MPH on public roads in the US, then be my guest

Its very possible, I found lots of space to do it on my last vacation 🙂

I'd prefer the Golf R32. Essentially the same drivetrains, but I just love Golf's. The TT has a certain persona that just doesn't fit me.

That was hardly the point. It is the principle that some agency or auto maker has decided to make a car that can never take advantage of it's potential. Many markets do not have this sort of thing, but because you are from the US you are an inept driver. Perhaps this will become the norm overseas, but that means the lawyers are winning there too. This isnt engineer limited, it is attorney regulated. Doesnt matter if it is ever driven that fast.

The Golf doesn't have that dual clutch sequential transmission.

Actually, it may have something to do with the tires. I know Turbo DSM's have a governor built in because they have lower speed rated tires and if someone were to go faster than the speed limiter, those tires would fail and result in a crash. AWD Turbo DSM's have higher speed rated tires and as such have a higher limiter, or none at all, I can't remember which, but I know it is higher. So who knows, they may have put the limiter on because the Audi will have stock tires not rated to go higher than 155MPH.

It will be getting it. Link. I'd rather have the 6 speed anyway; I like to row my own gears.

What kinda vacation was that? Jail?

Pretty cool. Love the drivetrain.

You act like this is something new? German makers Mercedes, Audi, and BMW have engineered 155MPH speed limits on all of their sedans/cars for YEARS. The only one who bypasses the rule is Porsche with the 911/Boxster.

This is nothing new or anything to be pissed about

Because I have not posted before about something, does not mean I have not taken note of it.

If I were really pissed about it, I would have commented earlier and more often. Perhaps you did not notice that after lamenting this trend, I said it would still be fun to drive? I still do not like it, but I do own a German car and the next will probably be German too. I could always buy a Nissan or something if it were too great a hardship.

Psst, you really love the eye rolly things dont cha? 😛 <----Personally l like this one more.

I really don't see what all the fuss is. Here in the US, we don't have the ability to do 155MPH on a daily basis LEGALLY on the roads. In Germany, they do.

Considering the fact that these cars excel at things that matter given our speed limit restrictions (acceleration/braking/handling/etc.); top speed is more of a "My d!ck if bigger than yours" kinda thing

I'm not terribly impressed with the engine, but I'd like to take the transmission for a test drive. I've heard preliminary reviews of it saying that it outshifts BMW's, Aston Martin's, etc (which seems reasonable, those only have one clutch, so they can't shift under load). They also say that the acceleration is amazing in that it just feels like one long surge. That's the part I want to experience.

Yes, I find it funny that cars get faster and faster, yet our speed limit stays the same...so it's a moot point to get anything that'll go over 75MPH.

What's not to be impressed about the engine? 250hp out of 3.2 liters is no joke. That's pretty much right in line with the latest 6 cylinder offerings from Nissan, Acura/Honda, etc. The VR series of engines are the smoothest, most balanced engines this side of the BMW inline 6 (mostly because the VR is only 15 degrees off of the I6). You really need to hear that thing, too. The sound is just awesome from the 2.8 liter 6; I'd wager that the 3.2 has a similar note.

OK, OK.. I don't have that much of a problem with the engine. I like the R32 and the engine in it (though I wish it would come to the US as a 4 door and with alcantara trimmed seats). However in the TT, I am underwhelmed. Performance over the 225 (which I drive), is marginal with a slight increase in weight as well. In fact as a roadster, it'll probably weigh as much as the new S4. Compared to the Z4 (<3000 lbs, 225hp) and Boxster non-S ( <2900 lbs, 228hp), Audi missed an oppertunity. As a coupe, it stands a little better (as before), simply because there isn't much comparable ($30k - $45k sporty couple). Previously there was really only the Z Coupe (225hp) or the M Coupe (315hp - old, 240 - older). Those are no more but now they're taking pressure from the G35 coupe and Z.

I am underwhelmed because the engine choice is a minor evolution. I had really hoped for greater showing (though I don't know what would have been a "greater showing"). The TT is near its end of life, so honostly there isn't much left for it.. but I would have preferred to see some sort of RS/S version of it.

It just doesn't seem like that's the road Audi ever intended to go with this car, though. For their halo performance cars, they've got the RS6 etc. The TT has always seemed to be more about style than performance, and I think it's actually succeeded from that perspective.

Also, why do you think the TT is "near its end of life"? You mean the current generation, or the model altogether?

True, but as the only sports coupe in it's line up and possibly the best handling car in their line up (given that most of their other cars are larger sedans and station wagons), I'd like to see it have a place as one of their "halo performance cars".

"End of life" - Just the current generation. The VAG MKIV platform itself is approaching its end of life too. The next generation TT is suppose to be larger, based on the B6 platform (same as the A4) and it's supposed to have real back seats. Unfortunately.. I think all that will make it less of a TT. I'm disappointed that the car is headed in a larger direction. It will bode well from the engine performance aspect, but it is already a porker in its smaller incarnation. Though, if I were in their shoes, I too would be hard pressed to come up with something to follow up the current TT. Its concept introduction was groundbreaking as was its faithful transition to mass production.

I imagine there will be a "halo performace" version of the next generation TT. The TT is an icon for Audi, and the larger platform will give them more engine options.
