Audi S6 V10 - am i crazy?

After hearing this clip, i'm just enthralled by an S6 V10. and in fact, my brother found one in immaculate condition for about 20k.

i currently drive a 2010 hyundai genesis coupe. it's paid off. probably worth about 11.5 +- 1.5. so i'd be looking at about 10k difference all said and done.

so the big question is, how bad would it be if i traded my gencoupe for an S6? definitely an upgrade in almost every aspect - luxury/comfort, performance, cargo and people space.

of course it doesn't seem like the most financially prudent decision, but i feel as a car enthusiast that you should own a car with 8 cylinders or more at least once in life ;)

Not all decisions need to be rational...

If you want one, and can afford it, why not?

While it may not be prudent to use such a car as a daily driver, neither is it prudent to go through life regretting what you didn't do...

Or you could go another direction...a V6 S10. :) Always nice to be able to carry stuff.

Have you done any research on common problems / maintenance issues / etc yet? Will you be doing work yourself or paying someone?

I really don't like the sound of them stock. That being said, cool car and pretty unique. Make sure that you get a PPI done with a good Audi shop.

Interesting that the A6 3.0T is pretty much as fast with some cheap bolt ons and maybe the more affordable car to own.

Indeed, it's going to split open your asshole and start 3 new ones. I wouldn't buy it, it doesn't look that great and considering it's an audi it will be a pretty big headache. I'd get something else, doesn't seem all that special to me.

I'd get the newer A6 with the 3.0T. Or A7. Or if you can save up/spend more M5.

The S6 cars can have quite a bit of issue - namely water pumps failing, spark plug gaskets letting oil in (misfires) and a lot of carbon build up. I think the main issue, really, is that there just isn't whole lot of space under the hood and just about everything ends up getting heat soaked.

One of our cars is an '07 s8 that comes with the slightly up tuned version of the same v10. Neither the water pump or spark plug thing has been observed on the S8 cars, about the only issues are the two front air springs and upper control arms. And the interior is miles better than the A6/S6 variety:

IMO, if you buy a car like this that was well taken care of – it will probably be fairly reliable. You can go several years without a major problem. I had a 2004 S4 from when it was about 4 to 8 years old and nothing broke.

BUT, you have to be prepared for the cost of something suddenly failing – and it don't do it yourself it will be expensive. So it is a gamble. On the S4, a weak point was the cam chain tensioner failing – which requires an engine pull and would cost $$$$. Say it has a 10% chance of failing any given year, so you are playing with fire but might come out without a problem, and in fact most owners will be fine.

It will also chew through expensive tires and brakes and oil – much more expensive regular maintenance than a typical car. And more expensive insurance. And gas.

If you really want it – I would get it. I'm glad I had my S4, even if only to learn I'm happier with a Mazda.

yeah i was doing some reading on AR about the S6. so you'd recommend the S8 over the 6, owing to the largest engine bay easing maintenance and reducing heat related problems?

Absolutely, I've not come across any mention of engine issues of any variety on the S8 cars; my car will 100K in about 5K miles and so far I've only hit 1 air spring, 2 control arms and a cracked wheel (courtesy of chicago roads).

not bad! can you replace the air suspension with regular spring and shock setups if shit hits the fan, or is it not really worth it/

i think my plan will be: if i relocate to say, texas (where my audi-loving brother lives), then an S8 would be an awesome car for both of us to have fun driving and working on if/when needed

Arnott and one other company sells rebuilt shocks for ~400 a corner; not really worth replacing with fixed suspension imo. Plus the car has a lift mode that adds extra ~2in of height, I found it super handy in snow behind our house

If you can still pay your other bills just fine and only have a little less to spend on yourself for enjoyment, then I say go for it! Im pretty sure I could come up with an equation comparing your happiness from the disposable income spent on yourself compared to the same money spent on that car, im sure it will be similar if not better, well for us car guys ;)
