A SEVEN speed auto? Good lord. That's gotta be a first in it's class.

Oh man, they're moving away from turbos? My girlfriend's car has Audi's 1.8T in it and that thing is SWEEEEEET. I can't imagine a V8 powered S4 though. That has to be incredible. I also see that Audi didn't let BMW keep the "most gears in an automatic" crown for long.

I'd like a 7 speed manual.

Too many gears IMHO. Many cars only use a 6th gear for economy reasons, and many others are poorly laid out.

my 67 Mustang had a 3 speed auto. It would get into 3rd around 35 mph.

At 100 mph, that mutha was LOUD!!!!!

I think I'm the only one who really likes driving a standard no matter what. Traffic, hills, open road, I don't care. Give me more gears and a smoother acceleration. I've got a 5 speed now. It's pretty cool, but I always want to shift into 6th at 70...

Too much power? I don't know if they can design them yet to be beefy enough to handle that much grunt.

Several F1 teams are still using "only" six gears - this does seem a little excessive in a road car.

I love driving stick too but have you ever driven a car (like a Porsche) with a heavy clutch in traffic? It's like working out on a weight machine.

It IS a CVT. Audi have been working on these for some time. The '7' speeds are simply preprogrammed points on the cones to provide 'ratios'.

AFAIK, the only traditional 6 speed Auto in production cars is in the latest 7 series and is made by ZF.
