Excuse my while I change my undies!!

http://autozine.kyul.net/0_News/Latest/Current/News_frame.htm

<< Audi has released the first details of its new RS6 super sedan and wagon, accompany with the photos shown here. Like the first RS model - the smaller RS4, the A6-based RS6 was built by Audi?s subsidiary Quattro GmbH as low-volume production. While the RS4 was strictly a station wagon, the RS6 is available in both sedan and Avant form.
Like RS4, the engine of RS6 was developed by Cosworth Technology (another subsidiary of Audi) based on the S6?s 4.2-litre V8. By adding twin-KKK turbochargers and by using Cosworth cylinder heads and probably pistons as well, the new engine produces a maximum 450 horsepower, beating BMW M5 (400hp), HSV Commodore GTS300 (402hp) and the new Jaguar S-Type R (400hp) by a convincing margin. Moreover, as a tradition of fast Audis, the RS6 has Quattro 4-wheel drive to ensure the tremendous torque, which is 412 lbft from 1950 to 5500rpm, will not upset the chassis. Accompany with the 255/35ZR18 tyres, the RS6 should deliver traction much higher than its opposition leading by BMW.

Few things i noticed here.

Poor use of the HP it generates.
"S6?s 4.2-litre V8. By adding twin-KKK turbochargers and by using Cosworth cylinder heads and probably pistons as well, the new engine produces a maximum 450 horsepower, beating BMW M5 (400hp)"

It must be fairly heavy. Also they stated it was Nose Heavy, which means the weight destribution isn't equal.
"Although weighing 1.8 ton and drive through automatic transmission, Audi is confident that it can sprint from zero to 60mph in 4.7 seconds"

Poor Handling
"problem is steering feel, which is already not brilliant in the S6. Even the newly revised A6 fail to sort out the problem completely. Therefore the nose-heavier RS6 is unlikely to match BMW M5 in this aspect. "

"More fun ? probably not, because the RS6 is offered with a 5-speed Tiptronic gearbox only."

I'll stick to the M5 :D

Take your M5 out in the snow, and I'll watch you crash and burn:) And in stop and go traffic (like what I'm used to), I'd be cursing a manual.

LOL if you're able to afford an $80k sports sedan, do you really believe you're going to be taking it out in the snow? lol. Not really a valid point anyway because BMW is known for it's terrific stearing and handling. It's German built for christ sakes! :)

As far as the 6 speed vs the 5 speed auto, the only reason that Audi is not using their six speed is that it can't handle the hp/torque that the engine is putting out. They're just too lazy to design a new one :) If i'm buying a $70-80 sports sedan, i want to be in control of it. It'd be like buying an Automatic Z06, blasphamy (sp?). But it's all personal opinion. I drove a Mustang Boss w/ 400hp through downtown everyday. It never bothered me. Once you get used to it, you don't even think about it.

To play devil's advocate for a second, I can't imagine I would take any $70K+ car out in snowy weather, nor can I imagine buying such a high-performance car with an automatic. I loathe automatics and can tolerate the occasional inconvenience in traffic in favor of fun everywhere else.

Why not drive in in snow? Quattro is PERFECT for winter-conditions! And I see people drive their sport-sedans/wagons in the middle of snowstorms in Finland. M3, M5, Calibra, S4, S6, T5... You name it, I've seen it. Just because you have sports-sedan with lots of power and torque doesn't mean that you have to drive it like crazy in bad conditions.

Well never buy an Audi S8, BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class, Mercedes SL-Class, Jaguar XKR, Jaguar XJR, or a BMW X5 4.6.

When you start getting into vehicles of larger size (anything bigger than a 3-Series/A4), I personally would do away with the manual.

"When you start getting into vehicles of larger size (anything bigger than a 3-Series/A4), I personally would do away with the manual."

But those cars you mentioned do come with autos because they are "luxury sedans". The M5 and new Audi RS6 are NOT marketed towards soccer moms and executives. This car is a performance vehicle pointed towards rich executives who want the BMW feel, with the Z06 performance. An awesome car all around.

I wouldn't go out and get a Viper with a triptronics!! Both of these cars are built towards a certain group. If people don't care about speed, but still wanted a damn fast car, they could get the 540i or an A8.

It's just a transmission though, no point in debating it :D They are both awesome cars. I just prefer the BMW for handling and style (cause performance is going to be the exact same it seems).

Nemesis77 - thats what i was saying. The M5 handling and suspension is awesome enough you can drive it in the snow - as long as you know how to.

You don't need to lecture me on Vipers, 540i's, RS6's and Z06's...your preaching to the choir here

The point is, I personally don't care to have a manual on larger vehicles. I'd just get the automatic. For a sports car, most definitely a manual is the only way to go (911, Z06, Viper, M3, NSX, etc.).

But when you're dealing with a 4,000 lb vehicle, I'd rather sit back and let the computer do all the work.

What the heck is your suspension going to do for you in the snow (unless you are trying to pull some Mario Andretti moves or something...but even that doesn't make much sense)...when you're talking snow, you're talking TRACTION! M5 + 400HP + RWD equals a bitch on the snow. Ask Windogg...he has an X5 while his brother has an M5.

BMW M5 & Subaru Legacy Outback...we all know that that the Subaru would fair MUCH better and it has NOTHING to do with the suspension. Snow/Ice does not have the same properties as asphault so all the fancy double wishbones or MacPherson struts up front w/multi-links in the back aren't gonna do you much good staying on the road.

You sort of have to account for the idiot factor in driving in snowy conditions, though. Like the one guy said a few posts earlier, people in Finland drive M5's in the snow with no problem. If you don't act like a retard then pretty much any vehicle (other than a motorcycle) will work fine in the snow. If you think getting an automatic 4WD car will make you impervious to snow, then you probably fit the demographic of people who get into the most accidents. They get an inflated sense of security because their car has all of that crap, and drive like morons. Its fun driving in my 300ZX in the winter, past all of the 4WD house-sized SUV's that flipped over into a ditch because their drivers thought their cars could do all the work.

Of course you can drive an M5 in the snow, but what I'm saying is that a ton of torque + RWD is not as optimal as the same amount of power being directed by AWD. That's a FACT!

Of course there are idiot drivers out there, but hopefully, someone with enough money to buy a M5 or RS6 has the common sense to know the capabilities of their vehicle. But given a competent driver, the RS6 wouldn't be as much of a chore to handle in the rough stuff as the M5.

No snow in the ATL = M5 still rulez!

I do like the new little spoiler on the boot of the new S4 and and now RS6. Does a lot for the rear-end. Beautiful cars, no doubt.

Well ya, I never said that RWD handled better than AWD in the snow, I just said that an idiot could probably flip over an RS6 or Outback as easily he could an M5. Saying a car is superior because of its handling in snow is sort of silly, imo.

Why not just make a 700hp superwagon:Q, a realistic output considering its (V8)turboed and no more of this 300, 325, 400hp.....
