I just remembered hearing the guy at the dealer say Oil needs to be changed every 10K miles. I though it is every 30K. He says its to do with the direct injection crap. Do you believe this?

Um...Q7 is an Audi...not Infiniti...but thescreensaves does seem to be either making a parody or is really clueless on cars.

A general rule of thumb is that a car should have its oil changed every 3-5K miles. Newer cars that the factory puts synthetic oil in have factory recommended intervals of 10-15K. I'd recommend you still do it every 5K miles as it is the cheapest way to keep your car running smoothly.

30K miles between intervals and you are guaranteeing a longterm problem. If this post is sincere, this is one of those reasons I fear buying used cars...there really are a lot of ignorant people in the world when it comes to taking care of their vehicles.

If the mfg says in can go 30k between changes then I?m not changing it till then.
Some mfg like bmw with there 7 series show oil change intervals of every 15k.

My last car was a 02' 745 had the bmw for 4 years and oil was only changed 3x with about 50k miles put on it.
The newer efficient engines out in today?s vehicles and the type of oils being used are going to make 3-5k oil changes a thing of the past.

50K is hardly a measure of how long an engine lasts. If you had said you changed it once every 15K and the engine lasted 300K...I'd be impressed.

If you have a expensive car where the factory actually puts synthetic oil in from the start, and you actually take it to the dealer to do your oil changes (insuring the proper synthetic oil is used), then you may be able to get away with 15K between changes. But for most people, that is not practical. They take their car to the local Jiffy Lube where the cheapest oil is put in their car. If they drive on that oil for over 5K, they are certainly doing damage that could be avoided with regular intervals.

Also, the longer your gap between changes is, the more likely contaminants will enter the oil (metal chips, etc) and the longer you'll be running with those contaminants. By changing your oil more often, the time your engine has to deal with those contaminants is greatly reduced.

A lot of people don't just get rid of their cars after 50K miles and want their engine to last as long as possible. Regular oil changes are one of the cheapest and best ways to keep that engine running smoothly for the long haul.
