is there a way to tell apart the pre-2000 A4 1.8T from the later ones ?
the pre-2000 1.8t has 150 hp while the later ones has 170. how can I know which is which without knowing the actual year of make?

also, would it a better idea to mate the 1.8t with FWD tranny or with the heavy Quattro instead?

Do you have access to the car itself? It'll have a sticker on the underside of the hood and the rim around the doorsill. I'm sure the year will be on one of these stickers.

Do you plan on modding it? If you get the quattro, then any loss from the AWD system can be negated with a new ECU (chip).

I would go with the 1.8T FWD instead of the quattro... the 1.8T already isnt a very powerful engine, and the A4 is not exactly a light car... Adding the extra weight of the quattro would be too heavy for the 1.8T IMO....

Is the quattro available with a 5-spd manual at all? or can it only be used on an automatic???

IMO you don't really need quattro in a sub 200 hp car and the extra weight is wasted unless you need AWD (Snowy conditions). I would go with the FWD auto because it has CVT too. There is a manual option for quattro available.

If you have the VIN, you can always take the number to an Audi dealer and they should be able to tell you the exact specs on that vehicle.
If you do plan to take the Quattro, certainly opt for the stick-shift. The Auto's gonna be a slow. Though, you can always chip the 1.8T to much higher hp & torque.

The 1.8t actually isn't *that* bad with an auto. Especially around town. Audi has set everything up to get the most power down real low. You don't have to wind it up like you do many 4 cylinders.
