When people don't pay their monthly bill after a few months the unit is put up for auction.
I used to do storage auctions and sometimes you hit and miss, You are only allowed to look through the door of the unit, NOT GO IN. Then you and the other people bid. I have gotten a unit for anywhere from $10 all the way up to $1,000+. At storage auctions you need to EMPTY the room within 24 hours or forfeit the cleaning deposit, usually $50-$100. for EACH UNIT you buy. I am in California by the way. And in California the storage auctions are ALWAYS on WEEKDAYS. They are very rarely on weekends because most of the buyers sell what they buy on the weekends at SWAPMEETS.
You can make a good haul sometimes. For Example one time I bought a room for $50 but I made over $1000+ just on ebay sales of the stuff. You just never know what you'll really get except what you see looking through the front door. Sometimes you will find gems and sometimes you will find trash (Literally).
In California (SoCal) there are auctions EVERY weekday practically. There are TONS of storage units in SoCal. There are usually several units up for auction at any particular storage business.
By law you are supposed to turn in to the storage unit manager any documents or personal important paperwork, like birth certs, diplomas, etc, etc.
Going to auctions is very fun indeed it's like treasure hunting. However you better own a truck and have some help because even cleaning a closet size room will take up to a few hours. I've spent all day cleaning out a garage size unit. Because most of the stuff in the unit is GARBAGE not literally but it's stuff that unless you plan to sell at a swap meet it is useless. I used to only sell on ebay. So furniture and bikes and stuff like that was useless to me.
Some of you have said things like "It would be neat", "It would be fun" Well let me tell you it's a very cut throat business. There are usually a group of regulars that show up and they HATE new people. They will out bid you just to pissed you off and have you leave. But once you become a regular you will fit right in.
Make no mistake about it, The regulars do this as their FULL time job. Some make a VERY nice living out of it. I've seen guys show up in $100,000+ cars, with 2 or 3 helpers in a big truck and buy up to 10 units.
