ATX12 and P6 power connectors

It has been a while since I built a system.

When are these connectors needed, only for a P4 system, or also for an Athlon. Tom's Hardware says they are needed for Procs over 1.6GHz, but does not say for P4 or Athlon.

I have a new power supply with both. Do newer MB all come with these connectors?

Please, someone clear up why and when they are required.

Thnks

The ATX 12V (2.03 compliant) is for AMD and Intel P4 based systems. Not all AMD boards come with the connection, but you will find all (that I have seen anyhow) of your P4 motherboards with either the special 4 pin or molex-style connection.

Thanks

So If I get an Athlon board without one of these connectors should I be concerned that there will be enough juice to power the CPU?😕

Nope, unless you are planning to do some serious overclocking. These extra connectors are mainly on dual Athlon boards.
Some "overclocking friendly" single proc mobos have them also.
