ATX versus AT for servers

Here is a server senario for you. So you run a server at home. Then you get a blackout or brown out for a few seconds. You don't have a UPS so your server goes kaput. The power comes back on. If you have an AT case, the server powers right up again. If you have an ATX case, what happens? In my experience, sometimes the server powers back up, sometimes it doesn't because of the soft power switch. Does it mean that you're screwed if you have an ATX case and no UPS?

Any comments?

Most new motherboard have a setting in the bios for what happens after power outages, either it stays off or it powers back up.

It all depends on the mobo manufacturer, though I've seen it in AWARD bios version since 1998, while most catching on now.

I can't stress this enough. Get a UPS. They will save you a mountain of headaches. I run all 3 of my servers at home from one 500VA UPS. When I work at home I noticed that the house experiences at least one very short blackout almost everyday. Not enough to reset clocks and such, but enough to reboot computers. This reeks havoc on your hardware.

If you have a server to protect data and backup, a UPS is a small price to pay for piece of mind. Even a little cheap one will do for one machine.

Thanks for the info. I do have a UPS so I'm covered, I was just wondering what would happen if you didn't have one.

Thanks again.
