I thought I had enough parts laying around to build a spare PC.
I have an ATX PSU with a 20 pin connector.

Had a never opened mobo laying around. It's a
Biostar 945GZ Micro 775 SE
The connector is labeled JATXPWR1 and is 24 Pin.

It's been a while since I built a PC but do I need a new PSU?

I also need the 4 pin cable that goes from the video card to the mobo connector. Does it have a name so I can find it at Frys?

TIA

What video card? MOST are powered by a molex-type connector. Nothing should be required to go from board to card.
Does your PSU have the 4-pin connector (2x2) that powers the CPU? (usually in the top-left of the board near the CPU socket) Without that, it's unlikely that it will boot.

No, PSU doesn't have that connector. :(
Video card is an MSI NX8800GTS.

You can buy the adapter to go from a Molex-type connector to PCI-E, but you're still going to need a different PSU (I think) because you don't have the connector for the board.

I downloaded the manual and they list it as:
JATXPWR2: ATX Power Source Connector
By connecting this connector, it will provide +12V to CPU power circuit.
I'm not positive about the 20/24 pin connector, but IIRC, you SHOULD be ok with a 20 pin...BUT, you'll need an adapter:

BUT, without the other connector, it's moot.

Just buy a quality inexpensive PSU for the computer.

I don't think you'll need that much power, but I certainly wouldn't want to recommend any cheaper PSU. (cheaper in quality, not price)

just buy a decent PSU (450 -550 watt name brand one).

It will connect to the MB and video card correctly with no adapters required.

What cpu will you be using?

No you won't, the 24-pin plug is basically the 20-pin plug with 4 more pins glued on the end. You can simply plug the 20-pin plug into the 24-pin socket, and you're fine.

In any event, his PSU doesn't have the necessary ATX 4 pin connector...he needs a new PSU.

DO NOT use a 20 to 24 pin adapter. It will add unneeded resistance and connections to the circuit. I have yet to see a board that required a 24 pin, but they may be out there. Every board I've run will power up fine by just plugging in the simple 20 pin ATX to the 24 pin header.

Without the extra P4 connector though, you may be SOL anyway.

Is Raidmax any good?
http://www.frys.com/product/5366448?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

EDIT
I might get this one, if it comes with cables:
Antec Basiq 500W
http://www.frys.com/product/5045145?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Raidmax.....buy only if you want your computer to blow up. Horrible power supplies....overrated, underbuilt, cheap, cheap, cheap.

The Basiq.....nice, basic power supply. Will do its rated output.

But if it were me, I'd move up a level in Antec's lineup and look at their Earthwatts line. Better built, more durable, better electrical performance.

Or look into the Corsair CX line.

Raidmax is one of the "bottom tier" PSU's. Looks to be an Andyson OEM product...something to avoid when possible.

Like all retailers, Fry's sells some good...and some absolute junk.

Correct. No adapter needed with a "modern" PSU.

Get with it old man...it's time to bring the basement into the 21st century...let's automate those torture devices.

I am actually building this PC to take to work to use with a KVM switch and my company laptop. I can't do half the stuff I need to do on the company laptop and it would take WAY too long to get what I need.
So, I'll spend $100 on this and use it in conjunction with a flash drive. I am tired of taking stuff home to work on.
