In my search to find the answers to some fan wiring questions I had, I came across this document. Thought it might be useful reference for somebody building, modding, or cooling a case, or someone like me who doesn?t know if they need a three or four pin tail on a fan. :)

For the people in the business, or other experts: Do you find that ( ?all?, ?most?, ?any? ) manufacturers adhere to the wiring voltage/color scheme of tables 8-9 on pages 27-28, or is it all on a case-by-case basis ?

If a case manufacturer signs on the the ATX standard and qualifies their products as meeting the standard thay MUST meet that standard. Shorter answer; to the best of my knowledge and with the few ATX spec'd cases that I have worked on; the color codes match, although sometimes the 'shade' of the colors varies. Extension harnesses for the power to the 3.5 and 5.25 drives and the harness extenders to AT & ATX connectors on motherboards seldom match the ATX published color code standards, I don't think that the standard applies to these type of products.
