I am new to the C2D and C2Q motherboards, and have just bought a C2Q 6600 and i wish to use my Seasonic S550 powersupply and perhaps a P35 or X38 base MB. My question is that the motherboards i have seen all have an 8 pin ATX connector and some manufactures have blocked 4 of these connectors. Do you need all 8 pins to connected for a Q6600 or can i get away with connecting the 4 pin ATX connector to my powersupply

Thanks

Q6600 TDP = 105W

A typical ATX12V 4-pin connector can support about ~9A (108W) max without any problem. The actual range is defined by the terminals and appliance wiring used (as well as factors like application temperature range, wire length, jacket material, interface mating force, blah blah blah), but based on some component datasheets, application guides, and other references (none of which cite any concrete numbers), I arrived at "about ~9A" as a reasonably sound figure (give or take 1A).

If your processor TDP were under 96W, I would say not to worry about it unless you planned to overclock. Higher than 120W = definitely implement all 8-pins.

Between 96W and 120W, ehh...toss a coin? Your call.
