Hey guys, well I'm hopefully going to be building a new rig soon. Nipples pointed out in my previous thread that I needed an ATX 2.0 PSU for my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum. (I can't find that thread right now) I had previously considered the OCZ Modstream 450w model. It had a 24 pin ATX connector and was only $100. On to my question, is the "Enermax 420W EG425P-VE SFMA Dual Fan PSU" compatible and sufficient for my rig?

Components:

Case: Antec SLK 3000B

Power Supply: (Item in question.)

Motherboard: MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (NF4 Ultra)

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+

RAM: 2 sticks of Corsair Value Select 512 MB DDR400 PC3200

Hard Drive: SATA 80 GB Seagate Hard Drive

Optical Drive: Liteon SOHW1633s Dual Layer DVD Burner

Floppy: Panasonic 1.44 mb Floppy Disk Drive

Video Card: MSI GeForce 6600 GT

Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard

Mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer

Monitor: NEC FE771 17" CRT Monitor

Speakers: Altec Lansing VS2121

Thanks for anything you have to say. I really hope it's compatible; I found it for just over $70 CDN.

When I started another thread for people to critique my system, i was informed that my system would work better with an ATX 2.0 compliant PSU. I'm under the impression that the Modstream isn't. Can someone confirm or deny that?

If the Modstream had a 24-pin mobo plug, then it's ATX 2.0. A word of caution, however: I've read that your board's on-board audio is powered by a -5V rail, which was dropped from the ATX 2.0 spec. So, if you use a ATX 2.0 PSU, there's a chance that your onboard sound won't work. Again, this is just heresay, but it's something to keep in mind.

Thank you for your comments. How about with the DFI NF4 Ultra-D? Would it have the same problems with the PSU? I'm looking for a no-hassle first build here. And am flexible with what to get for parts. I found the Enermax page for the PSU, it's ATX 2.01. That would be good right?

My sons pc has a similar setup, excpt for the MB (K8NF-9) and his unit is powerd by a Seasonic Super Tornado 350W. The 3000+ is Oc'ed to 2ghz and his rig only uses 110-120watts at idle. Dead silent as well

Thanks for your comments guys, but its hard to find Seasonic PSU's in Canada (other than NCIX) and my parents won't allow me to purchase anything online. (They're kind of paranoid..) I'm getting most (All of the components for my system from a place called www.canadacomputers.com) They have a few retail stores in my area (Toronto) and their prices are okay. Back to the PSU's: anyone have any experience with Enermax Noisetaker P series PSU's? I'll most likely get one of those.

Thanks for your responses! Looks like I am going to go with the Modstream...it looks so damn good. It should work, can't wait to get my hands on some parts!

My K8N Neo4's onboard audio works fine with my Antec TruePower 400W + 20-->24pin converter. So I think you should be okey.
The DFI's onboard audio might actually give you some problems if you have rear fans in your case.

ATX 2 mainly deals with three things:
1- The 24-pin connector, which is the same as the connector used with dual Xeons - so it was already out there.
2- Requires a slight improvement of efficiency across the output range - many PSUs already meet the standard.
3- Split 12V rails for safety - no other reason. Single rail is much more flexible and I recommend it. Just be careful. I'm sick of the idiot-proofing of the word. How the heck are we supposed to clean the stupid gene from the pool???
And then there is the disappearance of the -5V rail which is now complete with this last minor rev. I've had a PSU for the last year and a half that lacked the -5V rail.

Big whoop! Zippy anyone?
