ATTN: SoCal residents **UPDATE 7-02-04**

After my initial phone interview with Sargent Fletcher they decided to interview me face to face for a Test Engineer position. It is scheduled for next Tuesday morning. They don't pay for travel expenses so I will be paying out of my own pocket. 🙁I'm desparate for a good job anyway, so I will have to bite it.

Anyways, I never been to SoCal and never heard of El Monte. I'm gonna book a flight (from Seattle) and a hotel soon and maybe a rental car. While I'm down there I want to know if there is any place of interest, places to avoid, how not to get shot or mugged. How far is it from LA? I will be doing my own research, of course, but I just want to hear from the locals. Thanks.

UPDATE 7-02-04:
My interview went well. This morning they sent me an offer letter via email. Finally after a year of unemployment (ok, I worked under the table here and there) I'm going to join the workforce on July 19. Wooohooo!! California here I come.

SoCal <NorCal

what are you talking about. I've lived in both places for over 7 years and So Cal is way better than NorCal. The weather in nor cal sucks.

Sargent Fletcher? I know exactly where that is...I used to live 5 min away from there. The city that it's located in (El Monte) is a sh!thole, but the surrounding cities around there are ok. Your office...which looks more like a factory is located in a industrial business park off a very busy freeway. PM me if you want more info.

haha El Monte???

Here's some advice - working there is cool, but you don't want to live there! 😀

EDIT: LOL, jooksing beat me to it. 🙂 He's right, the areas outside of El Monte aren't bad at all, but that area is mostly a commercial district.

if you have a AAA membership, ask them to plan out your trip.

if not, go to the beach during the day, and blow all your money in hollywood or sunset at night.

a lot of good (and dirt cheap) chinese restaurants in the monterey park, alhambra area

I LOVE eating there... damn but its too far away

Thanks for the info & PM, jooksing.

Unfortunately I don't have AAA membership, masterxfob.

z0mb13, you read my mind. I will be looking for cheap chinese and thai while I'm down there.

If you work in El Monte, deffinitely go and live in Arcadia, if you can afford it. Plenty of stuffs to do, not too far from the beach (~1 hr to Santa Monica, Malibu, Laguna; ~45 mins to Newport Beach). Half an hour to LA or Orange County, an hour to Six Flags Magic Mountain. About 20 mins away from Oldtown Pasadena, which is hella cool. Plenty of stuffs to do in SoCal, including girls.

el monte, there are a lot of chop shops/ricer shops in that area if my memory serves me correctly.
You're thinking of Alhambra and Monterey park, which are adjacent.

lots of strip clubs and computer OEM resellers in the City of Industry not too far from El Monte 😀

Newegg's nearby too. heh.

I would feel weird going to a strip club without my buddies. Besides I would want to avoid spending too much money, so gotta avoid the temptations. Newegg might be a place to visit since I order so much from them in the past.

I'll keep in mind to check out Arcadia if I get the job. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. I'll have to land the job first. They'll just have to get past my ugly mug, I hope. 😀

i'm two blocks away from there! 😀 nice

el monte isn't that bad...a lot of asians 😀 well in my area of el monte. 🙂

The Sargent Fletcher is located on Fairdrive. You can see it from the 10 Freeway between Rosemead and Santa Anita Exit. They just opened a Starbuck and a Quiznos next to it. I would necessary call El Monte a dump, the average house in El Monte is around $300K unless you can call a $300K home a dump. But there is huge Asain population around that area. You can always kick it at Burbank (home of NBC and the Tonight Show) which is only 20 minutes drive. Good luck.

If you work in El monte you would want to live in Pasadena. Its only 15-20 mins away and a lot better off place to live. Arcadia is right next door, go south of Pasadena is Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel where all the good chinese food is at. It's only 15mins away from downtown and 30 mins away from West wood. Its almost in the middle of everything.

yes, pasadena is the place to be if your in the san gabriel valley, its where i live after all 🙂

gl with the interview, if you get it and move down here i would suggest the pasadena/sierra madre area for living; arcadia, south pas, and san marino are very expensive. also pasadena has its own water and power supplied by the city( also the first city to have a freeway, the 110) which saves during black/brown outs in the summer(especially on the bill)

asia town(alhambra, san gabriel, etc etc) is where youll find a lot of good food at but be carefull 😉 around town they have letter grades for how well the restaurant passed its inspection, dont eat at any place without an 'A' hanging in the window.

this side of so cal is nice compared to LA, you shouldnt have anything to worry about. also, we have the most cars per square foot and the largest economy of any state so be prepaird for traffic jams and high gas prices.
