Here's the deal....I have two U.S.R. 56k modems, a 56k Performance Pro modem and a regular old 56k hardware modem.....both don't seem to want to work in Windows XP. Has anyone successfully got a U.S.R. hardware modem to work in Windows XP? They have absolutely no Windows XP drivers for these two modems, at the top of the driver download page it says Win2k/WinXP natively supports most of their modems. If that was so then why in the world does Windows XP not play nice with both of my modems?I can't get the Audigy win2k drivers to work in XP either when a lot of people have successfully done it....but every time I direct Windows to search in the Audigy win2k directory, it installs a driver then gives me a "data is invalid" error. Any help is GREATLY appreciated:)

Something fishy is going on.......I browsed through the WinXP CD, found the modem section, and directed the driver installation to that location. It installs the driver, but still the crummy "data is invalid" message. This same message appears when I try using the Audigy win2k drivers to install my Audigy soundcard, but other people say they got the damn thing to work.........This is pissing me off, why would it say the data in invalid for the driver when it's just a generic 56k driver for WINDOWS XP? It should work dang it, ARGH!!!!!!!!Why is it doing this to me but to no one else?:( I just need a confirmation that some U.S. Robotics 56k hardware modem owner has gotten their modem to work in Windows XP like a charm, then I know something must be up.......Could my DVD drive be screwing me over when I try extracting data from a CD? I don't know why it would becauseI just recently installed Windows XP on this computer, it should be working.

my USR 56k modem worked fine in XP when I used it before I got DSL.
It was an external hardware modem though upgraded to V.92

I didn't even have to install drivers for it.

I see no reason why Windows XP wouldn't automatically install a generic 56k modem driver.....at startup every time......in the taskbar a message will pop up saying it found a simple communications device. Then, the hardware installation assisstant thing would come up, asking whether to search for the driver or don't search, let me find it. If it was supported by Windows XP, it would automatically install a driver for it right? My question is why the funk it refuses to do so and continues to torment me so:( My system is running excellent except for the modem and sound card ganging up on me and making me go insane:(

Anyone have any input on why the generic 56k drivers still cause the "data is invalid" error when I try installing them? Or why Windows XP doesn't automatically install drivers for the modem? It should be supported by XP, or else U.S.R. would have the Windows XP drivers on their website, or at least I 'd hope so.

My main concern here is to get my dang modem to work, because the Audigy has WinXP drivers on their site.....can't get them without a working modem though. Anyone have ANY suggestions? I could use all the help I can get regarding why my modem doesn't want to work in XP.

I know this won't help you out but I have the USR 56k Performance Pro PCI Hardware modem and did a Clean install of XP and it found the modem without a problem. It works perfectally even though with DSL I don't use it much. In fact XP so far has found all of my hardware on my main system where 2k and even ME would not. I did not have to install one driver to get XP to work with all my cards and other harware. I was impressed

There has to be something going on if drivers are coming up corrupted. What OS did you run on that system before XP? Did everything work there?

Good Luck

It doesn't even attempt to install drivers for it.....it always brings me to the hardware installation assisstant or whatever it's called. I let it search for drivers, I manually made it look for drivers on the Windows XP CD, on the U.S.R. installation assisstant, but every time I let it grab a driver is always says the data is invalid right after it installs the driver. Something must be out of whack with Windows XP, and I have no clue what is making it do this. I upgraded from Win98SE, but then I did a clean install over it. This same thing happened before I did the clean install too, I did that to try fixing the problem but it didn't work:(

My old isa USR model 0484 is working just fine under XP. I didn't have to manually install anything or adjust on the upgrade to W2k then WinXP.

Must be something with your setup. I'd uninstall the modem then try it again maybe in a different slot or with a different port.

Try installing another piece of hardware (a joystick, printer, etc) that you know should work. Don't uninstall something then reinstall it, it's got to be a totally new piece of hardware for the system. If you get the same error, try reinstalling XP. I had a similar problem this summer with a fresh win2k install. I'd point it at the right drivers, and it'd tell me they were invalid. I did a reinstall of the OS (I may have formatted first, but I don't think so) and it fixed whatever was wrong.

Is the modem internal or external, via serial port?
It's likely that relocating PCI cards to different slots would solve the problem. Try with only video card & modem installled & functioning, then later add sound card, etc. Bios setup: disable unused ports (parallel, serial, USB), enable ACPI, disable "PNP OS installed?". Check http://www.rojakpot.com/ for more bios optimizations.
