Alright, so my company and their partner in crime really, really love me. So much so, that they gave me a gift certificate to their other partner in crime. I managed to snag $500 for pimping their products.

I just found out about it this morning and was fairly shocked by it all. So, I spent all day fairly drooling over their ad. I decided I wanted a home theater system. I remembered a fewcomments about how Yamaha was better than Sony in many respects.

So, rather than buy the first thing listed on their front page ad , I went and got the Yamaha HTR-5540 coupled with the JBL SCS135SI speakers for ~$500.

This was an impulse buy. I knew I wanted one and sorta knew what brand I wanted.

But now I've been looking at the 5550 receiver and noticed all the optical/S-Video inputs/outputs that it has over the 5540. And near as I can tell by comparing the two, that seems to be the only difference. But it is a large difference, I think.

Basically, my question for everyone is, did I do a good thing? This is my first ever home theater solution. I currently have a digital cable box with optical-out, an X-Box that has optical out, and eventually plan on getting a dedicated DVD player and using the optical out on it as well as all the S-Video connections. I have a so-so Philips-Magnavox 27" PiP TV that works for me but will down the road be upgraded. As far as I understand things, I should be able to leave the television on the S-Video input and only switch inputs on the reciever, correct?

With all of equipment that I have now, should I go back and exchange the reciever for the 5550 model and pay the difference?

Help me ATOT, you're my only hope! :p

Since your Xbox and Cable Box both support Optical I would say that's enough reason to swap right there. I assume you would use the Svideo on the Xbox and a dvd player when you get one so the Svideo switching on the receiver would be a plus as well. Might as well go ahead and spend a little extra now instead of regretting it further down the road.

How do you like the JBL's? I'm considering picking up a set of the JBL NSP1's within the next week or so.

good choice with the yamaha receiver, its the best line at best buy these days (nakamichi used to have a pretty decent receiver there)

as for the speaks, i'm not sure.

check audio review to see if they think theres much of a difference between the receivers

I'm sorta leaning towards the exchange for that reason alone; all of the inputs. Again, this was an impulse buy :p The money was just burning a hole in my pocket.

As for how I like the JBL's... Y'know, I heard them when I was at Best Buy and I liked the way that they sounded there. But I won't be able to give you a good report on how they sound until I open the box and set everything up. But I'm waiting to do that until I finally make up my mind about the receiver. :p I talked to a few of my audiophile friends briefly and they claim that JBL was the shiznit in the day. <shrug>

Thank ya. It was a Best Buy only gift certificate, so that's why I went there. And I'm pretty ignorant about HT altogether. I just know how to hook 'em up, I don't really know what to look for when it comes to specifications. I just glad I've read a few things here to know that Yamaha is supposed to be decent. And I'll start hunting down the audio review sites...

I'm no expert at this stuff... but anyway, just my two cents.

You're talking about S-Video... but there is "component inputs" that provides better quality than s-video.

I would not bother with Audio review. To many product fanboys post reviews there. Home theater forum and AVS is the place to go for opinions. As for speakers and Best Buys selection. I would go with the NSP1 set and pick up the Sony WM40 sub and stuff it polyfill. That Yamaha reciever is a good choice in the low fi reciever range.

Yes, but my TV doesn't support component video, so I'm not really worried about that for the moment.
