What's the difference between dependant and dependent? Are both correct? Can both be nouns and adjectives?

Without looking it up, I'd say that 'dependEnt' is the correct spelling. Possibly 'dependAnt' is an acceptable variation, or could it be used to describe something that's lying down?

I think the "ant" ending is the noun - your son is a dependant. The "ent" ending is the adjective - your son is dependent upon you for support.
