It needs a GPS unit to give you yardage, etc.

Kinda like a portable version of what you see in a golf cart at a nice course.

Yup, it would have some sort of GPS. What DO you see in a golf cart at a nice course? I'm curious.

layouts of the holes, distance to the pin, etc. pin placement on the green.

Wouldn't you need to load the score card and course information data into this system when you go to play at a course you haven't been to before? How would that work?

Similar systems are available attached to golf carts in nicer courses. I don't know about weather info or food availability, but distance to pin and elevation info is available. These systems will also keep track of your score. The disadvantage that current systems have is that many of them use an in-house triangulation system. In other words, they don't use GPS, which makes their systems more expensive and more difficult to maintain. The problem with GPS is accuracy, and the fact that the government can change the accuracy of the GPS system at their discretion. I don't know how accurate current GPS receivers are, but I would think that a golfer would want a unit that was accurate within 3 to 5 yards.

Would this be a unit that a golfer would purchase, or that a course would provide? I'm guessing that a course would provide the unit. Another thing to consider is size and weight. If I'm carrying my clubs, I don't want to figure out where to put a big, heavy device. A small form factor and low weight are key. Also, you may want to think of providing a clip system that would attach to a persons bag.

I go to the golf course to escape technology, not carry it along with me.

Just my thoughts.

exactly... that's why email and stock quote access would be useless to me...

The device looks pretty big in the pics... I would NEVER use one if I am carrying my own bag... If I have a pull-cart, maybe, but definitely not when I am carrying them myself...

Its a little larger than a newer Gameboy (but not those flip ones). In our studies, we have definitely found that its too big.

Can some of you guys fill out the questionnaire afterwards? Just the scale questions and a comment or two at the end.

I need about 10 responses for a good study and I only have 1 so far! Thanks!
