We recently had new sod laid in the front yard. Since then some creatures have come on a weekly basis late at night. They roll up the edges of the sod looking for bugs (I assume). Last night they actually made a couple holes in the middle of the freaking yard.

Is there any somewhat humane way to deter them? We thought about tying our Chihuahua to the tree out there to yap the intruders to death but that would upset the neighbors. Other idea was camping and shooting them (not safe). If all else fails maybe hire a trapper.

We're guessing raccoons even though we've never seen any around here...

Sounds like skunks, or opossums, it's very common. They are after the grubs, which are now closer to the surface feasting on your lawns new roots. Get rid of the grubs, for a better lawn, and less critters.

Yuppers. I had a problem with moles in the backyard. Treated for grubs and other insects with OrthoMax stuff, which was cool cause them little suckers popped out of the ground and died the next day, but the moles left after that.
