I just got an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 meg) video card. I had problems installing it and have had to re-install winxp home edition. The system works and is stable until I try to play a game (I have tried counter strike and grand theft auto 3, but no 2d games).

However, last night, when I got on, everything worked fine. CS seemed really choppy, but it didn't crash. Wondering what changed, I checked the system properties and my chip was running at a little over 1 GHz instead of the 2+ that an AMD AthlonXP 2600 should (or atleast what it has always been reported as running at prior to my troubles).

So what I suspect is that the video card is not the problem, but is actually the processor that is overheating and only does so when it is taxed (at first I thought I had a bad install of direct x 9, so I reformatted again and started fresh).

My system is:
AMD AthlonXP 2600
512 MB of PC2??? (Don't remember the ram exactly)
Asus A7N8X-X
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
I use the onboard sound because I suspected that either there was an IRQ conflict or the SB Live value was causing problems...

I followed dclive's suggestions in this thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1359897&highlight_key=y&keyword1=blue%20screens%20of%20death and have the .cab and the dump file from earlier today (I confirmed that it wouldn't be stable at the correct 2600 settings).

If anybody wants to look at those files and give me suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Oh, and I will be switching to water cooling as soon as my new pump and radiator get here.

Thanks in advance.

I'll take the cab file when you have the chance to send it. You might use RAR (www.rarsoft.com) to segment it into 999K chunks...

Update your nvidia MB drivers; I'm guessing you have an nVidia chipset:
f87c6000 f87cb280 nv_agp nv_agp.sys Wed Oct 29 14:58:11 2003 (3FA029E3) That's old!!
nvatabus nvatabus.sys Tue Jan 13 14:32:45 2004 (400455ED) And that's old too!

Now see if the problem continues.

Now turn off audio in your BIOS, and see if the problem continues.

If that doesn't work and the issue continues, keep going:

You have pool corruption, so do this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188831

Common use examples to create these two registry keys would be:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\ Memory Management

Specificly, add these to the registry:

Value Name: PoolTag
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x2A <<<< This means 2A, and it's a hex value.

Value Name: PoolTagOverruns
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

Your CPU is:

kd> !cpuinfo
CP F/M/S Manufacturer MHz Update Signature Current Signature Features
0 6,8,1 AuthenticAMD 2130 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 00007fff

Let us know. And send those cab files.

All of them. I also updated all the nvidia drivers (as per the ATI installation directions). Could the mobo bios need updating? I'm using version 1006 and Asus gives a version 1009 (but the notes don't seem to be anything substantial)...

Perhaps my nvidia update didn't work correctly...

OK, so your drivers are up to date (awesome!); when you did the rest of the tests, how did it turn out? :)

The computer won't boot at the correct settings any more. It just hangs until the mobo finds a setting that will work.

Could this possibly be a power problem?

Please explain what you mean; I have no idea what you're talking about.

It will only boot with autodetect settings that clock the chip at ~1 GHz. If I try to get it to run at the 2600 settings, it just doesn't boot.

I thought that maybe my power supply wasn't enough. The ATI manual calls for at least a 400 watt power supply, which is what I have. So I'm just wondering if maybe the CPU isn't getting enough juice...
