ATTN ATOT Greenthumbs!!! Help Needed!!

Apartment living and two new puppies has led me to the belief that there must be a better way for them to relieve themselves than having to walk down three flights of stairs or peeing/pooping on the patio. I would like to create some sort of grassy area but I am unsure on the specifics on how to do so.

Ideally I would like to have a small planter area that I can place on my patio that is about 3'x3' with a height of about 2" that I can plant a small patch of sod in. They are well trained when it comes to eliminating on grass when they see it and I think this would make the housebreaking process easier.

If I went down to Home Depot, what would I need to grab? I would assume a planter of the size I am looking for, in addition to the necessary sod and soil. I am plant-dumb so any help/tips/advice on how to make this happen would be greatly appreciated!

Where do you live? It is getting to cold in most areas of the country now. But, I dont know if a two by two patch of grass is going to help to much. Must dogs like to walk around before settling on an area to pee/poop. Grabbing some sod, since it is mature will probably resist the refuse better then newly seeded grass so that is a good idea. But the You might be better grabbing a paint tray or maybe spackle tray.

Does the home depot by you sell Sod? I dont think ours does..

SF Bay Area. They are small dogs (Jack Russell Terriers) so a smaller area should suffice. If I could find a large enough paint/spackle tray that sounds like it might just work. What type of soil would I want to get for the sod?

any bag of topsoil would be ok, maybe even a bag of topsoil mixed with sand. You are not gonna need to much soil for a 3" deep pan since the sod will take up some space..

Thanks for the info...

Now starts the search for a huge paint tray!
