Attention ThinkPad T4x owners! Especially those experiencing buzzing noises!

I remember people here posted that their T40s made strange buzzing/electrical sounds. I believe I may have a fix

Description of the problem: The noise is of a buzzing/electrical nature and was described by one poster here as coming from the area near the USB ports on the T4x series machines. Several other users in the former IBM ThinkPad forums (IBM took the forum down 🙁 ) reported this problem. The Dell Latitude D500 was also reported to have this problem and the same solution.

Solution: Disable power management on the first (of four) USB Root hubs listed in the Windows XP hardware manager.

Control Panel -> System Properties -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager Button -> USB Controlers list.

You will see four items at the bottom of this list called "USB Root Hub"

Double click on the first USB Root Hub.

This brings up another window - click on the Power Management tab of this window.

Uncheck option "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power".

The uneven pulsating electrical noises should cease. I turned the power saving on and off, and I think it makes a difference. I can still hear a long high pitch when the HDD is active, but the static noises seem to have dissapeared.

If anyone could try this and post results on this thread that would be great! 😀

Great to see you may have a fix, but still sad to see this expensive of a machine with this annoying problem.
