It looks like some keys guys behind the Specialist mod for half-life are working on a successor and need some kickstarter money to help finish their project. The game is going to be free, doesn't have any stretch goals, no DLC.

I loved both the specialist and action half-life. Really hoping people take notice of this because the specialist had quite a few people playing it in its day.

I knew this was going to be a Kickstarter thread. =( I wish some of these games would actually come out and be awful already so people will stop the blind funding of everything.

This is sometimes true. Some developers might have made one cool title way back in the DOS or Commodore 64 days, but with no titles attributed to that person in over a decade how can someone throw money at him?

Gamer1: "Oh that guy who made this old classic game from 25 years ago? He was awesome!"
Gamer2: "Yeah lets give him tons of money for his next game"
Dev: "Thanks guys I reached my goal of $1,000,000 so I can start my game!"
Gamer3: "So dude, when are we gonna see some results?"
Dev: *crickets*

There are other times when the game being funded is a reboot of another game that was pretty much crap for the time. I remember playing Carmageddon 1and 2. The games were ok, then someone got hold of it and made a 3rd one which was very poorly reviewed. So I don't see why anyone would fund a reboot.

This game is coming out regardless. They would just like a little money so they can spend more time on it instead of having to go to another job. If they can get some money it will cone out faster. If not the game will obviously take more time to complete.

I understand that, it just seems like sometimes there is hype about a kickstarter program for some dev or whatever and then you hear nothing. Almost seems like a giant cash grab somehow.

Some of these devs and such should take their game and sell it to a studio that can properly market and fund it. Bring your idea to whoever and make a sales pitch, if it's good they might take it on. That's just me though, but I do also understand that being independent and not letting the suits have any say is a big deal and a good thing.

To me, this is no different than any other risk/reward scenario. Investors plop down money all the time on ideas with hopes to reap a reward. We put $20 down to reap a few hours of fun. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - and really, I wonder if the success rate is any lower than a game that didn't use kickstarter and people bought just off the trailers/reviews.

i loved the specialists. so much effing fun
This guy gets it:biggrin: This game is for everybody that enjoyed those action mods. I loved both AHL and the specialist. Unfortunately not much was done with action half-life 2, so i'm hoping this game turns out a lot like those older mods.

The specialist was quite amazing. I'm not sure why any triple a studios never tried to incorporate what these games brought to the table.

The specialist is the only game I can think of that let you do bullet time in a multiplayer setting and it worked incredibly well.
